SH I - Install & Run With Windows Me

I've always been fascinated with subs and decided to find this game.

I just purchased Silent Hunter I Commander's Edition. I think I installed it correctly, but can not get it to run. It's been a long time working with DOS, but it's starting to come back to me (?)

Can anyone give me some pointers on installation and running this game ? I think I have all the hardware needed to play. I'm running Windows ME. It looks like an awesome sim !

THANKS in advance for your help.

You should be able to run it right out of the box, at least as long as you have got the sound card end of things correct. Exactly what is it doing or not doing when you click on SH.exe? On some Win98 machines it's normal to hear the sound for the opening video and not see anything on the screen. Clicking the mouse a couple of times will bring up the menu.

It is an excellent simulation and I'm hoping we can get you up and running!

First of all, THANKS for the speedy replies !

ChristopherT - I'll try to relay my experience:

During the install, everything seems to go smoothly. Sound and video seems to go well and the installation completes successfully. I'm running a Sound Blaster Live! audio card and am in the process of upgrading the graphics, but am presently running an nVidia TNT2 Model 64 AGP card with 32MB of on-board memory (but the computer has 512MB of RAM).

When I double-click SH.exe, the screen goes full dark then the desktop comes back up with a small DOS window session present, saying "FINISHING SH". The screen contains an error message "EO12: VESA DRIVER NOT PRESENT (USE /V OPTION)"

I've tried various different "fixes" NUMEROUS TIMES and have made negative progress ! I even tried the sticky posted here for "running SH 1 on XP" with the folder creating, file notepad editing, etc., to no avail.

There is no sound when the screen goes dead either.

I'm going to visit the nVidia website next and try to find out about the availability of this VESA driver - may be all I need ? Don't know why I didn't think of that right away. OR, should I be running a much better video card ?

If that doesn't work, I'm pretty much stumped for now. I'll wait for replies, before I give up tho......

Should I go with one of the later versions of the game ? I've heard several problems with them and SH 1 is supposed to be a gem.

THANKS again for your help !!

You could try updating your video card drivers. I've always stayed away from nVidia based cards so I don't have that much experience with them. What happens when you use the /V option which loads SH's Universal VESA driver? (Some nVidia cards don't have built-in VESA support, you might have to check for an driver update that deals specifically with that issue!)

In my experience SH1 is the gem, I really was suprised when UBISoft bought up the rights to SH then released SH2-4. Personnally, I don't think they should even carry the Silent Hunter title, but that's big corporations for you so...

Some people have had good results with SH2-4 however. Checking the various forums here will guide you.

I updated my video card drivers and that didn't help. I also searched NVIDIA's website for VESA and they had nothing.

I've also tried using the /V to no avail. Maybe I'm not typing or using the /V correctly. Can you S-P-E-L-L it out for a long time DOS non user ? Is it SH.EXE/V ?

SORRY for my stupidity !

OH, and THANKS for replying.

P.S. What video graphics card would you recommend ?

Hi Tom, dig through the Subsim Tips section, you may find what you need there.

THANKS Neal, will try that next. My DOS is really rusty and I'm spending a lot of time trying to refresh myself. I guess since Windows, you get kind of lazy.
