Christmas gifts.

For other people.

OTOH while I was out getting some stuff locally I stopped at a nearby Half Price Books and got some great used CDs. All Beethoven but one, and mostly stuff I didn't already have except for there was a 9th symphony with Jon Vickers singing tenor (MUST HAVE!! JON VICKERS!! also I'm kinda collecting different versions of that one anyway) plus a 5th piano concerto with Leon Fleisher/Szell/Cleveland Orchestra (classic, absolute must have).

What I may do this year instead of blowing all my leftover Christmas bonus money on CDs and whatnot, is buy some tickets to the Cinci Symphony Orchestra for the 2011/2012 season. They have Beethoven on two programs in February and one in March.

But Amazon is giving out extra rewards points on music downloads until the end of the year, so I expect I may treat myself to a little something.

And now, for me:

1 of: Beethoven [13 CD Box Set] [Audio CD]
By: Ludwig van Beethoven, Herbert von Karajan

A ginormous set, the complete 1980s symphony cycle and Missa Solemnis, the violin concerto with Mutter from 1979(?), and a ton of other stuff... basically at least one version of everything in his entire recorded Beethoven repertoire. And only $40. Just released last month which I guess is why I hadn't come across it before.

I know some people hate Karajan for a wide variety of reasons, but I've never been disappointed in any of the recordings he made with the BPO and this set mostly features them with IIRC a few bits done with their Viennese counterparts (who are not too shabby either ).

And then there's the digital stuff:
  • 1 of: Beethoven: Für Elise; Eroica Variations, Op.35; 6 Bagatelles Op.126; 6 Ecossaises WoO83 [MP3 Download]
  • 1 of: Beethoven: Diabelli Variations [MP3 Download]
  • 1 of: Beethoven: Complete works for Winds and Brass Vol. 1 [MP3 Download]
  • 1 of: Beethoven: Complete works for Winds and Brass Vol. 2 [MP3 Download]
  • 1 of: Beethoven, L.: Piano Trios (Complete) (Eisenstadt Haydn Trio) [MP3 Download]
And a very Ludwig van Christmas was had by... me!

You'd think that, until you compared it with the complete list of his works.

TBH I'm actually working on a little database to keep track of what I have and what I don't, because I'm getting to the point where I see CDs at Half Price books and then can't remember whether it's something I have yet to add to the collection, or is something I already have in multiple versions because really you can never have too many performances of the 9th symphony or Emperor concerto from which to choose.

Besides, what else am I gonna do with MS Access?

Edit: OH HEY tomorrow is LVB's birthday. Or his assumed birthday, since records show he was baptized on the 17th and that was usually done the day after the birth.

If he were alive today, he'd be 241 years old.

I have the absolute complete Beethoven, as well as the absolute complete Bach. While that includes all of the rarest stuff, it does only contain one recording of each, so FK probably has more different recordings of individual symphonies than I do.

Oh dear lord I've got at least two versions of each. And about 10 of the Ninth. Favorites like the violin concerto and last piano concerto, I dunno, 4 or 5 versions. Sometimes I find a used CD that can't be passed up because of the performer(s) involved. I have "complete" sets of things only because I got them used and therefore cheap and they are historically important but the recordings are way old so the quality is not great even though the performances are wonderful, so eventually I go looking for a more modern set with a different performer that I know I like.

And then there's the fact that some of the really rare stuff, you can't just *buy* without getting it as part of a bigger collection that includes stuff you've already got. I'm looking at a CD set of the string quartets & quintets right now even though I've got much of it on hand already because it includes alternate versions, unfinished pieces, all the rare stuff that almost never gets recorded.

I think he/she/it is just repeating post #202 above to claim their free downloads

I don't think it's personal about you not getting your Typhoon or Neal not getting his cut.
