Sub simpit?
Anyone ever thought about building a submarine simpit?
Like the flightsim simpits but for a u-boat. Lets say the control room of a type VII, with a small LCD screen mounted in the periscope. Then adding as much lifelike interactive controls as possible, all connected to the computer running the sim. Maybe even the TDC! And sonar station? And now for the fun part. You build it like a waterproofed room so when you get flooding you can have sprinkler systems flood the floor. Better have the maps plastisized. And of course you have lots of lamps that go on and off with close depth charges. Total power failure will be pitch black! If you build it in a trailer you could even have motion when you crash dive! |

Did they really use drugs? Well, have to include that also for realism!

Wasn't there a post once about some guy who was doing a room up just like the interior of a u-boat? Either the o-messe or the commander's quarters IIRC. I'm almost sure someone posted pictures. But it was quite a while ago.

Do the Silent Hunter series have any data sharing or other way to capture sim data and states?

For the modern stuff you could take a walk in closet, stick a couple of networked PCs, chairs and a red light and you would have a decent sonar shack like room.

If this is possible why not a sub simpit?
http://i568.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/P8230011.jpg http://www.scifihero.net/forums/inde...opic=6072&st=0 The question is what stations are possible to simulate, and would it be any fun? Playing the captain sure would be fun, but helmsman? |

Basically the answer is no, you couldn't effectively create a simpit for a subsim. Mechs and airplanes are controlled by one person making them much easier to do this sort of thing with. Submarines are manned by an entire crew. And finally the Silent Hunter series just wouldn't work with it as it only displays one screen at a time. The best you could do is something like the link provided by SailorSteve.

but... but.. but, yes you can, partially. All keyboard commands could be sent by real switches and controls, even by voice when talking into a tube (mic). By capturing sim data (if it is possible) you could also control lights and instruments in realtime in the pit.
So it is possible to have different people manning different stations and still remain on the same screen thanks to shortcut keys. Sonar and radar might not be possible though. Look at this demo video and you will see that it is possible to voice-control a whole attack just from the periscope view. http://knepfler.com/shSpeech/videos/ |

Nice livingroom! Though I had something more claustrophobic, moist and mouldy in mind.
