Default UBM better then SH3?

Kaleuns,
i know i'm behind the times...
just upgraded to UBM and looking awesome, mods enabled, loving the interface, missions, everything actually...
Your thoughts:
Do you like SH3 more or UBM?

Don't analyze qstn too much, just a general feeling about both games...
With or w/o mods enabled, your choice...

I like em both, SH4 crew manegment is easier but somehow I feel less as a complete crew I don't know any of em. The main reason I switched from SH3 GWX to SH4 UBM is that I got me a widescreen.

I like U-boats to much and I see UBM as a SH3 GWX+. life is tough now in 1943 in my type 9. Just dodged a HK group. Been forced down several times by aircraft. Life's a bitch.... I'm having loads of fun

Very good point, i agree, and also agree with 1943 being dam tough!
But that's what makes it so good, the tougher the better, fighting a losing battle (history tells us so) but dam, it's good to take as many down with us while we've got the chance/time...

Tad late reply...

I ignored SH3 for Starforce and the 1024x768 fixed resolution/no FSAA graphics when it came out.

SH4 is technically much better from the core engine, and for German U-Boats I actually like the setting, it's something different and not just the much overdone "VIIC in English Channel" atmosphere.

Maybe SH5, once properly fixed up, will actually make that atmosphere work, but for now I'm quite happy with SH4 - also because it gives me the option to play both German and US Subs in the same game, with a similar interface, so it's a bit of an "all-round Subsimulator".

SH4 UBM by itself is a wash, unless you like playing in the Indian Ocean. To complete it you need Operation Monsun, the complete campaign add-on for UBM.

There are little things that GWX has that are still lacking in SH4, like the traffic in the harbors and some other things, but those are purely graphic items. Also there is no equivalent to SH3 Commander in SH4. Those things keep me playing SH3 as well, but SH4 is good enough to make me stay there too.

I bought SH4 about the time when it came out and it was a disaster.

Hard to believe it took me ~ 3 years to finally make the switch.

But now I got:
  • a computer fast enough to run it
  • the Expansion
  • mods [OM, OMEGU, ..]
  • all the graphic improvements
  • a complete Das Boot sound mod which I assembled for my own use [bzw Sailor Steve: thanks a LOT for the DBSM mod, I could use a lot of your work!!]
At last, I am impressed by the sim, which was such a train wreck at release.

Here just some screenshot I took today, what an amazing looking U-Boat sim!

I say they are different. SH4 was not enough of a progression from SH3 to say that one is actually better in gameplay than the other. To my mind the improvements are (other than crew management) confined to eye candy.

But they play entirely differently and each is a thoroughly entertaining and instructive game. So which is better, SH3 or SH4UBM? The answer is "yes."

It's only funny because it's true.

Sh4 may be the last of the true Sub Sims? In a way, because of the DRM policy, SH4 should theoretically be the focus of modding and not 5. Beat them at their own game.

"Computer" games are a dying breed. And I just can't cop the walking around thing. Besides SH4 is fun...After all WE did win and didn't suffer the great losses of the Uies.

As for which one? I'd say a ship is a ship and you sink it. So depends on locality of choice.

That would be a losing bet. As long as people like me have the money still jingling in their pockets, willing and able to pay for a GOOD submarine simulation of diesel/electric submarines someone will be willing to produce what we want.

Right now with the relatively static state of computer hardware, barring some brilliant and unforseen new approach, all someone could do is produce something with roughly the same characteristics as SH3, 4 or 5. This would invite all kinds of comparisons, not all of which would be flattering.

What is needed is an advance in computer hardware comparable to what happened between SH2 and SH3. SH3 was so revolutionary because of all the new capabilities that no comparison was possible with any predecessor. When that is possible, we'll get our new submarine simulator. Until then, a new simulator is just inappropriate. It would be like pushing a rope. I predict we'll be very surprised by where it comes from. It may well be from someone we don't even know today.

I don't think that was anything to do with the hardware, SH2 was a very old looking game in comparison to everything else at the time of it's release. Compare SH2 and IL2 which came out the same year. SH2 & DC had poor graphics for 2001. Ultimation had the structure of a good game but the graphics and AI simply were not up to the mark.

What we really need now is a change of pace, we need a "Hunter & hunted" sim with surface and sub in multiplayer done right this time to revitalise the genre and re-capture the attention of the media/ buying pubic.

A change of pace when well done is always a winner. I'd love to see that happen,
