Icon5 First time player of Silent Hunter 4 here

Dear SUBSIM Radio Room,

As probably many once before me I saw Crimson Tide last night and remembered the whole Silent Hunter series, even though I never played them up until now.

If I wanted to play native, vanilla or a patched up version on Windows 11 over the weekend, where do I actually get the game? I see downloads links that seems very impressive and interesting but lack the base game.

Do I need to buy it, if so where would I do that?

Thanks a lot!

Jenny

Welcome to SubSim jennw002!

Most places, such as Amazon, no longer sell the disk version of the game. Amazon also does not currently sell the download version. You can get it through Steam games, but Steam can be a little squirrelly.

Steam: Silent Hunter®: Wolves of the Pacific

Steam: Silent Hunter®: Wolves of the Pacific U-Boat Missions

Notice that Steam sells the old v1.3 of the game (Wolves of the Pacific) and the U-Boat Missions Add-On separately, which brings the game up to v1.5. Whereas, Ubisoft has a full v1.5 (Gold) edition of the game

Ubisoft: Silent Hunter 4 DLC-PC

All of the links are for the respective US stores. Either is fine, and Ubisoft has been having rumblings of going all-subscription, which Steam basically already is, in that if they decide to drop a game, it is removed from the player's Steam start menu. Your choice as to who you "trust" more, but the Ubisoft way is $10US cheaper with just the one download, and since most mods are written for the v1.5 Gold Edition, the 'easy route' to go for now. Just be aware that both versions of the game will install into the Windows Program Files folder system, which are "protected" by Windows from changes, so you cannot mod the game in that folder structure. You can avoid that issue by changing your install path to a folder of your own choosing, by editing the path shown when you get to that portion of the install routine. I used "C:\Games" as my root. If you have deeper questions about any of that, just ask away.

Propbeanie, I never heard that before? Where is that documented that it disappears if they drop a game? Luckily i have sh4 1.5 on disk if that ever happens, But that's bothering me because I have tons of games I paid for on steam.

It happens all the time for various reasons. The most common of which is Steam losing the licensing rights. But if a game, or the Steam client itself can't run on a given OS (such as Windows 7), then that's it, no more access. Steam just took down a big one the other day, but I cannot find the article about it... but here is their current list of future drops: Games at Risk of Removal. It is part of their "EUA"... I believe the correct term is "designed obsolescence"...

EGAD! errr Josh Gad: he voiced the character of Olaf:. Mr Gad, a consummate voice actor from balmy hurricane prone Florida, has no clue why Minnesota is the 'frigid wasteland'(-50 F) of my youth; and why I stay in sunny inferno/quake prone Napa CA!

I should have read the agreement. Just did. I didn't realize I was not buying the game. Thanks for that. I'll keep that in mind when purchasing a license for higher priced games.

Default Steam games

I have generally found Steam to be a good place to run and organize games. If you have a disk disaster, like I had, you just have to install Steam again and get logged in, then you can download and re-install anything you have purchased. And it makes a handy place to find everything. If you want to point it to an alternate location for your library, on another disk volume, it cooperates with that.

Now to discontinuing titles. I have not experienced that, not yet at least. But if one has copied the full program folder to any location, and runs it directly from there. Like one needs to do for games with mods such as Silent Hunter 3 or 4. I don't see any way Steam can track it down and delete it, or disable it. They can't search all my computer drives for software. Can they ?

I suppose one way to test it, would be disconnect your computer from the internet and try to play a game from the programs startup file. I'm gonna try running a few games on win7 which Steam apparently does support anymore.
