I could be wrong but I believe you have to purchase the add on uboat missions which is v 1.5 EDIT: You need both of these for 1.5 $20 for both, I'd remove your current installation first and delete the SH4 in "my documents"

U-Boat Missions Add-On used to be sold by Ubisoft, but they no longer do. The Steam version is only for a Steam "base" game of Wolves of the Pacific, which is a v1.3 install. If you try a Ubisoft v1.4 on a Steam v1.3, you will get an error message that the game has already been updated. So you have to keep the Steam versions together, and the Ubisoft versions together, other than they no longer sell the Add-On, and only have "Wolves of the Pacific - Gold Edition", which is less expensive anyway, than what the Add-On used to be... lol

It definitely says V 1.5 on my steam uboats missions lower right hand corner. I'm confused by what you mean. EDIT: Okay I see what you mean, you need the original steam Wolves of the pacific game to use the add on uboats mission. So total cost would be $20 instead of $10. Steam has both and most of the modern mods need 1.5? I know mods like FOTRS and Darkwaters do, am I correct in this, so he would need to buy both at steam, wolves of the pacific and uboat missions addon to get V 1.5 anyway.

Hey people.

Long time since being here.

Thinking of starting the game up once again. Checked Steam if I should buy the game there instead of trying to install from my old DVD but after reading some reviews I hesitate. They mention crashes etc after a certain point in the campaign etc etc.
My feeling is the game is simply too old (and unsupported) for modern day windows but I could be wrong of course.

- Regarding the qoute above, is it better to go with original DVD and Ubisoft update or buy the Steam versions?
- Or am I just in for problems either way?

Thanks!

It depends upon what you are going to do with your game, and which version of the game your disk is. If it's Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific "Gold Edition", you are golden, and can add most of the mods avalable for the game. If you have a v1.3 or earlier version of the disk game, you can only update to v1.4 via a Ubisoft Patch that is available on SubSim here. None of the old patches, nor the "U-Boat Missions Add-On" downloads are available from Ubisoft. You can purchase the gold version DLC from them though. Steam works just as well as any version of the game. It is basically the same thing as the Ubisoft version, but has its own Steam licensing "security". Steam has two versions of the game. Version 1.3 is the "Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific" version, very similar to the most common disk version. It cannot be updated with the Ubisoft v1.4 patch. Only the Steam version of "U-Boat Missions Add-On can be use to "update" your Wolves of the Pacific" game. The main issue most people run into, whether old disk, new DLC from Ubisoft or Steam or elsewhere, is that the game still defaults to installing the game into the Windows "C:\Program Files (x86)\..." folder, which puts it under the influence of the Windows overlord, and no amount of modding will "take" when in either of the Program Files folders. You also have to edit the SH4.exe file to set it for your particular hardware set-up of display monitor and graphics card, which can also be daunting. But it can be cleanly run on any Windows from XP through v11, as of now... subject to change at any moment without notice...

Propbeanie, you keep saying most mods will work with 1.4
What Am I missing here? Most of the latest best mods say in their instructions 1.5 is needed.

JonB, as propbeanie noted most of the main issue comes down to not installing in the default windows folder and with steam, put it in steam library or on a disk other than C:

Personally I recommend the steam version wolves of the pacific and uboat missions add on V1.5
I have about 7 mods that work pretty much flawlessly now that I understand where and how to install the game and what to install along with the game and mods.

Here's how I do it on both 7 and now win10
1. Install wolves of the pacific and the uboat missions from steam in Steamlibrary folder(Not the default C:windows programs!) or install on another drive other than C:
2. NEVER TOUCH THE ORIGINAL INSTALLATION AGAIN!!!!!
3. Copy everything from your steamfolder>steamapps>common>Silent Hunter wolves of the Pacific
4. Paste all to a new folder named for the mod you are going to install( I use a different drive than C: for the new folder since my C: is fairly small)
5. Put JSGME in the folder and run it, it will put a subfolder called mods in your folder you pasted everything into
6. Put Large Address Aware in your folder you pasted everything into and run it, make sure it's pointing to the SH4.exe in your new folder and not the original install.
7. Put Multish4 v 1.5 in the folder you pasted everything into, run it and use three letters, like for Fall of the rising sun, I use FOR. (this keeps saves seperate from other saves. The default save is SH4 in documents folder, you don;t want different mods going to the same save folder) Make sure it's pointed to the sh4.exe in your new folder and not the original install
8. Download which ever mod you want for the new named folder, follow the mods instructions!
9. Run JSGME and activate the mod.
10. Make a shortcut from your SH4.exe in the folder you pasted everything into and rename it for the mod.

Do all the above for every mod you want to install using the original install which remains untouched as the template . I keep separate folders for every mod I have, there's only one or two I have any crashes and it's probably because I missed something during the install of the mod. The reason not to ever touch the original install is if you mess up the installation of a mod, you just wipe the new folder you created and the corresponding save in the documents folder rather than have to wipe everything, and download the original steam installation! A lesson I learned numerous times and numerous redownloading and installing!!!!!!! DOOOOOOOH.

I have OM Darkwaters,FOTRS,We Dive at Dawn,TMO, TMOwTW, Berbster, IJN Jyunsen B mod, OM Itailian campaign 2.0 and a couple other mods. Of those I have trouble with maybe 3 occasionally. Key for me was don't install original install in the default location, make new folders for every mod using the untouched original install as a copy and paste. Yes the method I chose uses up more space than just plunking every new mod into the mod folder but I seem to have less problems. Hope this helps, Most of what I learned was from the old salts here and with a little trial and error, okay a lot of trial and error and a lot of completely start overs until I realized, never touch the original install!. wooo that was a long post.

Thank you for the warm welcome! Silent Hunter have always been near to my heart but since the true SH-series stopped, no competitors have managed to "win my heart". So, after seeing a youtube video of Greywolf or whatever his name is, here we are (again).

Wow, that does sound like quite a job to get it working but once you get it, it´s quite easy I guess. Thanks for your time and effort to explain it!
At this stage, it´s more about getting out on the water again. Mods is not that required (will most likely become later though) but I remember to use Trigger Maru a lot back in the days.
Thanks for you guide.
