Must admit I enjoyed that puzzle even though I know little to nothing of the subject matter.

The location (Marine Park) is also a lake with a small island which is home to ducks and swans and the site of a model boat club I used to be a member of back in the day. I spent many a good time with my radio controlled boats and even a 7' WWII S Class submarine.

I liked that too when i was young. Had a "Robbe" rc control but never really came to use it, though i built lots of models of all kinds over the time..
The S class sub must have been great

Ok what is that ..

close enough. 1880ish, but accuracy wasn't the main focus as much much as the 'Dixie' aspect to a bunch of Confederate reenactors incl. my brigade leader who collected classic era railroad dining car memorabilia and knew the Roaring Camp RR owner. The reenactment, including a 10 mile march, four abreast in full gear at 0300 AM thru the Santa Cruz Mtns downhill to the rail-head brought out residents, largely former Southerners who cheered us on. The whole advertised affair attracted hundreds of 9 western states' reenactors, and lots of local (paying)train riders; becoming something of a safety and logistical nightmare in a small mtn. community of Felton. Needless to say, the damnyankees skeedaddled at the first volley...

in the South, damnYankees is considered one word!!
is your puzzle a WWII Tallboy bomb?

^ Re Jim's puzzle, I searched in a similar manner to you, Kai, and was also faced with dozens of photos of these "ride-giving" locos, none of which showed the answer - so I had to leave it. And I almost asked what colour it was too, so as to narrow things down - but then I thought "Nah... it's obviously black"

And your new puzzle - well it's obviously a Lava Lamp

No it is real. The lower part on the photo may look a bit different on some photos, more like a black cone getting smaller at the lower end instead of these fin/supporting structure getting wider.
Problem is even posting a small part of another photo will show it on Google image ..

Hint: it was not used in the position shown, i did that to confuse

Is this thing supposed to be surrounded by water (or another liquid)?

I never use Google Lens to solve these visual riddles but this was too hard to resist, so I photoshopped a black cone to the bottom of your doohickey and flipped it over on its side (you said you up-ended it deliberately)...... but Google still gave me nothing whatsoever
