Yes, "The Enemy Below" is definitely the best submarine movie ever made! Its a good blend of submarine and destroyer action. "Das Boot", as it was originally released, in German with English subtitles, is also very good. Unfortunately, the only DVD I've found of Das Boot is the Director's Cut with lipsynching.

How very strange. All the DVDs I've seen let you select between the subtitles and dubbing. In fact I once watched the Uncut version dubbed into English and the subtitles ON! Great fun comparing the two.

I still love The Enemy Below, but their U-boat interior is so phony it hurts.

Oh, my answer to the poll is "None of the above".

K-19 was okay. I think they need to make a movie out of Peter Huchthausen's book "October Fury". You should add Hostile Waters to your list and the Russian film 72 Meters. :|\

There was something about the old black and white Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea's - when the submarine interior was slightly more realistic, the missions were espionage rather then counter-alien.

There were two episodes that dealt with the deployment of a new type of nuclear deterent which got me (as an 8 year old) thinking about the ethics etc. Fifteen years later, i'm writing a PhD on International Law thanks to that programe.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea's first season was its best. They were still attempting to do fairly serious science fiction/drama. That was before all those werewolf and mummy epsidoes.

Das boot is an absolute classic, easily one of, probably even THE best sub movie ever made....
But there's no nuke boats in it
Out of those three, well, CT, I think we all agree is mostly a farce...it does have some good music though, to be fair...K-19 is also good, contraversial back in Russia (though to be honest, I didn't think it portrayed the sailors on K-19 as incompetant, I mean there was the one guy tapping the gauges, but hell, we all do that kinda thing.) but over all was a good movie. HFRO, although some bits are a bit far fetched, her conn for one thing, the movie had some good actors (with bad Russian), brilliant music, and Sean Connery.
I think you should have put Hostile Waters up there too Kap, it may have been a HBO made for TV film, but it was still pretty damn good.
Anyway:
1) HFRO
2) K-19 / Hostile Waters
3) CT

Das Boot has got to be the worst movie for "Entertainment" value I have ever seen. I got more enjoyment watching grass grow. This is a title that got labeled a classic so everyone calls it a classic, blah. I watched half of it and ended up turning it off. Tried reading the book and couldn't finish that either.
I read a book a while ago that had different comments from various boot veterans( can't remember the title ) but the reactions went from hilarity to horror to insulted. I'll try and find the book next time I go the library and get the title. The captain tried to correct the director but just gave up arguing and just went with the flow.
