Almost 80 years ago, the Japanese city of Kyoto was spared from being bombed with nuclear weapons because of a honeymoon.

Kyoto was one of the primary targets being selected as nuclear targets at the end of WWII. However, US Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson was against targeting that city and ultimately vetoed the selection.

Why?

Because, in 1893, Henry married his wife and had their honeymoon in Kyoto and had made multiple trips over the decades before the war. The city had such sentimental memories for Henry that he did not want to destroy the city.
