(D) WEATHER

Weather en route New London to area of operations varied from calm, mild days and cool nights, to raging seas, winds, and bitterly cold nights.

Weather in operation area was mild to warm, with choppy seas for most of duration. A period of about 72 hours in mid November produced ongoing storms with blinding winds, rains, fog, and heavy seas.

Weather en route BASE II from operating area was almost yachting weather along the Portguese and Spanish coasts. Shortly after passing Cape Finisterre as BARB entered out reaches of the Bay of Biscay temperatures dropped
with choppy seas and occasional rain squalls for duration of transit.

(E) NAVIGATIONAL AIDES

Lighthouse at Pointe de la Tour near Safi provided a aide to navigation in operating area.

Lighthouse at Cape Finisterre aided in navigation along the Spanish coast.

Lighthouses in the Firth of Clyde provided navigational aide en route to Rosneath.

(F) SOUND CONDITIONS AND SOUND GEAR

Sound conditions throughout patrol ranged from poor to okay. During the only torpedo attack of the patrol, sound had difficulty following
the surfaced U Boat target in the heavy seas.

Sound conditions were enemy were unknown but suspected likely as enemy U Boat did not appear aware
of BARB's presence until premature detonation of torpedoes.

(G) RADIO

Radio function for this patrol was normal.

(H) RADAR

SJ

SJ radar performance was excellent overall. Targets were typically detected at around 17000 yards.

SD

SD radar performance was sufficient overall. Typical detection range was 18000 yards. However,
a low flying TBF was not detected and in a case of mistaken identity, BARB was bombed.

(J) MINES

No mines were encountered on this patrol.

(K) ANTI-SUBMARINE COUNTERMEASURES AND TACTICS

No enemy ASW vessels were encountered. Just one enemy air patrol was encountered in operating area.

(L) MAJOR DAMAGE AND DEFECTS

BARB suffered minor damage when attacked by a USN TBF. All damage repaired at sea.

1. Rudder transmission
2. No.2 Periscope
3. Shattered glass fixtures-All compartments
4. Light bulbs-All compartments
5. Minor gland and piping leaks in Conning tower and control room.
6. Minor leaks in high pressure air lines.

(M) THERMAL LAYERS

No thermal layers were encountered on this patrol.

(N) SPECIAL OPERATIONS

BARB arrived in area a few days prior to scheduled November 8 landings and conducted
reconnoiter via periscope during daylight hours as close as 3000 yards off the beach.

Reports were sent to COMSUBLANT regarding tides, beach status, weather, and other vital
information on a
nightly basis.

BARB deployed six Army Scouts under LT DUCKWORTH via rubber boat approximately 4,000 yards
NNE of Point de la Tour near Safi at 2330 7 November. Operation went smoothly with the enemy unalerted.

Following this, BARB per orders, proceeded to position at the Safi landing beaches where provided guidance
via infrared signals. At dawn BARB submerged and observed the bombardment, exchange of gunfire with shore batteries,
carrier air strikes, and finally landing craft hitting the beaches. Per orders BARB cleared the area to provide
barrier patrol North-West of the landing area.

BARB was ordered to rendezvous with submarine U.S.S. Mullet off the Canary Islands. MULLET suffered critical breakdowns in
all four HOR engines during her patrol. Upon rendezvous on 14 November, via rubber boat the required parts and our best Chief Motor Machinist's Mate were transferred
to provide assistance. MULLET was able to get underway and per orders BARB proceeded independently, with her CMoMM stll aboard MULLET. Naturally, our Chief rejoined the crew
upon MULLET reaching port.

Factor in termination of patrol: Orders per COMSUBRON 50

(T) REMARKS

A successful patrol in all assignments were completed to satisfaction. Great disappointment is felt at the failure to sink the enemy U-Boat
encountered on 11 November, due to torpedoes prematurely detonating and alerting target. Enemy ASW activity was surprisingly light throughout the patrol. The friendly fire incident of 17 November was quite disconcerting and not the only one to befall a boat of SUBRON 50 during operations in support of TORCH. Hopefully, such incidents are avoided in the future

Proceeded down the West Coast of Ireland to assigned area at 15.5 knots by day and 10 knots during night time hours. Submerged to avoid aircraft on SD multiple times. While likely friendly, this was done to avoid friendly fire incidents. Arrived in area on 28 December 1942.

Conduct submerged patrol initially but heavy seas necessitated surfaced patrolling after 31 December. Over next 20 days no contacts were made, aside from one large flying boat believed to be German Luftwaffe. BARB was not detected.

Finally, at 1053 on 21 January, a SJ contact bearing 049 17600 yards was made. BARB headed for contact at flank speed to intercept.Vessel was soon tentatively identified as a surfaced U Boat, judging by course believed to be inbound to French coastal ports. GENERAL QUARTERS-TORPEDO was called and BARB submerged for attack at 1141. Upon submerging, BARB approached rigged for silent running at 100 feet, just below a thermal layer at 95 feet.

At 1213, BARB came to periscope depth and could make out the outline of a surfaced submarine on the horizon. Plot soon showed submarine on course 030 at 16 knots. BARB went back to 100 feet and continued approach. BARB rose to periscope depth for attack at 1235 with tubes ready to fire, torpedoes set to depth of 6 feet.

Upon raising of scope, boat was clearly identified as a Gato Class Fleet Submarine, believed to the SHAD en route home. To avoid confusion, BARB went to 150 feet and turned away , secured from GQ and remained submerged rest of the day, surfacing at 1900. No message regarding a submarine transiting our area was received.

BARB continued patrol in area, as approached thirty days and thus expiration of our time on station. Storms settled in during this time, making for a rough few days.

At 2118 on 24 January, BARB received a ULTRA ordering a search within 100 nautical miles of 44-50N 24-30W for damaged U-Boat and another en route to provided assistance. Set course for area West of current position. Course 258 at 18 knts.

En route to the search area, weather calmed but a strong chop remained in the seas. Upon arriving began search of area. Arrived in search area just after midnight on 27 January and began search. Submerged during daylight hours and searched, considering U Boat most likely would do this and did not want to expose BARB to submerged attack with her on surface. Surfaced at dark and continued search.

At 1805 SJ Contact was made, bearing 030 13250 yards. BARB submerged to close contact and went to GENERAL QUARTERS-TORPEDO.

After a long slow approach with no sound contact, came to periscope depth to find two large submarines, tentatively identified as U Boats Type 9, surfaced and alongside one another., with the one to starboard and farther away from BARB just slightly ahead of the closest one.

All bow tubes were made ready to fire and set to 6 feet depth. BARB closed to 1000 yards and at 2131 fired six MK 14 torpedoes.

Three torpedoes hit the closest U Boat, which quickly disappeared beneath the waves. Torpedo number four prematurely detonated just a few yards from second U Boat. This U-Boat was now underway, but given its proximity to three torpedo explosions appeared damaged. However, it was able to speed up enough to avoid the second and third torpedoes, which passed astern. Second torpedo reaching end of its run sometime later and the third detonating itself about 10 seconds after missing the target.

BARB was already swinging around and plotting to fire a stern shot at the now underway U Boat. Four torpedoes were soon fired, but just after firing U Boat disappeared, apparently submerged, all torpedoes missed.

BARB went to 150 feet, rigged for silent running, and collision. Sound never made contact with the U Boat again. BARB secured from GQ and remained submerged in area throughout the day, surfacing at 1900 hours.
Attempting to locate U boat again and wreckage but unable. Per orders, turned for home after midnight.

Passage home from 29 January- 3 February was uneventful. At 1001 on 3 February moored alongside USS BEAVER at BASE II, Rosneath, Scotland and terminated war patrol.

Patrol Data

Duration of patrol: 40 days

Torpedo Attacks 1

Torpedoes Fired 10

Torpedo Hits 3.

Ships Sunk 1 Type 9 U-Boat 1051 tons

Ships Damaged 1Type 9 U-Boat 1051 tons

* Surfaced AI U boats/submarines can not actually submerge in SH 4. However, many are set to randomly reach a last waypoint and "delete" , which view through periscope can appear to be a dive as they gradually fade away from visual/sonar/radar. Also possible this sub sunk due to damage sustained with its close proximity to 3 torpedo hits on other sub.

WEATHER
------------

Weather during transit and on station was typical for the area this time of area. Most days featured light to moderate fog and clouds, with seas always at a solid chop to heavy swells, with winds ranging from 10 knots to in excess of 30 knots. Several days of storms hindered operations in area at times.

Multiple large and moderate sized icebergs were observed in the area.

NAVIGATIONAL AIDES
--------------------------

Lighthouse on Jan Mayen Island provided navigational aide in assigned area.

ATTACK DATA
-----------------

No attacks were conducted on this patrol.

SOUND CONDITIONS AND SOUND GEAR
----------------------------------------------

Sound conditions were generally poor in assigned area due to heavy seas and temperatures.

Sound gear functioned properly but suffered in the poor sound environment.

RADAR
---------

SD

SD Radar performed well, with typical detection of aircraft at 14000 yards.

SJ

SJ function was adequate through first part of patrol. Around 20 March, SJ began to fail to detect surface targets. (had a accidental shell out to windows, so I reloaded a previous save after exiting game. Upon reload, SJ did not function rest of patrol. Possibly damaged?)

RADIO
--------

Radio function was normal during this patrol.

MINES
---------

No mines were encountered on this patrol.

ANTI-SUBMARINE COUNTERMEASURES AND TACTICS
-------------------------------------------------------------

No enemy ASW measures were encountered on this patrol.

One submerged enemy U Boat was located via sound, conducting a approach on BARB. Contact was made just after diving for patrol at dawn. Submarine was estimated 3000 yards and closing, likely nearing firing point. However, this is believed to be a chance encounter with a U-Boat operating or transiting through the area.

Several Allied aircraft and two destroyers attacked BARB in friendly fire incidents.

Allied ASV radar appeared to detect BARB long before they showed up on BARB's SD radar scope. This required BARB to submerged several times to avoid attack. Explosions indicating aerial depth charges and bombs were dropped. All of these friendly fire incidents involving aircraft took place at night.

Two Gleaves Class Destroyers, identities unknown depth charged BARB. BARB on the surface, encountered a DD South of Jan Mayen Island, NNE of Iceland. BARB's SJ radar did not detect the contact and thus contact likely already had BARB, who was on surface riding out a storm which had just cleared at time of contact, on her surface search radar.

Heavy sea state, thermal layers, and ocean temperatures helped to provide inadequate sound conditions for the hunters, thankfully. A second destroyer soon arrived on scene, indicating a ASW patrol.

BARB evaded the two DD's by rigging for silent running and depth charged, with evasion at test depth of 300 ft.

MAJOR DAMAGE AND DEFECTS

No damage occurred on this patrol.

Defects

SJ Radar Unit stopped functioning properly from 20 March to end of patrol.
Repairs conducted by USS BEAVER at BASE II, Rosneath.

THERMAL LAYERS

Thermal layers in area were quite shallowed as were recorded at 65-80 feet throughout area.

PERSONNEL

Crew performance was superb in spite of a challenging 30 plus days in area with heavy seas, bitterly cold temperatures, numerous "friendly fire" attacks, being stalked by a enemy U Boat and normal privations of patrol.

Eight men advanced in rating during this patrol, with one officer and six more being designated as "Qualified in Submarines".

HEALTH AND HABITABILITY

Health of crew and habitability of boat were overall satisfactory.

Rough seas did restrict meal preparations on some days and other challenges.

MILES STEAD-FUEL USED

Miles Gallons
Rosneath to Area 894 19550
In Area 9550 85550
Area to Rosneath 955 20224

DURATION
Days
Rosneath to Area 3
In Area 36
Rosneath 3

FACTORS IN ENDURANCE

Torpedoes 24
Fuel 24500 gallons
Provisions 39 days
Crew Indefinite

Reason for termination of patrol: Time on station expired-fuel status low.

REMARKS

A challenging patrol given the weather conditions and difficulty of searching for enemy U-Boats, which was primary assignment in this area. Allied ASW attacks, particularly by air made operations a challenge.

Given experiences of this patrol, it is felt better that a friendly submarine not be assigned to these waters in the future.

War Patrol Report
USS Cisco SS-290
War Patrol ONE
12 September-18 October 1943

PROLOGUE
________

Arrived Brisbane, Australia 1 September 1943 from New London, CT via Balboa, Panama Canal Zone. After liberty for crew and voyage repairs, began daily training and work ups for patrol. Loaded 24 MK 14-1A torpedoes and provisions. Ready for sea 13 September 1943.

NARRATIVE
__________

Daily routine consisted of a trim dive at dawn, typically between 0630-0700 and a
second trim dive at dusk. Star sights were taken at appropriate times each day, navigators discretion.

SJ radar was secured during daylight with sweeps made ever half hour.
At night SJ sweeps were conducted every 10 minutes due to obvious reduced visibility.

With seven officers aboard, there were two officers on each watch, with the OOD on the bridge when surfaced, and in the conning
tower when submerged. AOOD stood watch in conning tower to monitor radar and sound data, dropping to control room
when a dive was called, unless at General Quarters.

Continuous sound sweeps were made when submerged. When surfaced, occasionally would stop engines to listen for contacts,
taking advantage of the hull mounted soundheads. When surfaced, SJ radar sweeps were made every half hour during daylight hours and every fifteen minutes during nightime hours.

Upon refueling at Darwin, proceeded to Area B4 in the South China Sea via Banda, Molucca, Celebes, and Sulu Seas, to the Mindoro Strait. Same course was followed home without a stop at Brisbane as have plenty of fuel for the return trip to Brisbane.

ANTI-SUBMARINE COUNTERMEASURES AND EVASION
___________________________________________

Enemy ASW was fairly standard. Convoys encountered had two escorts, one forward and one aft,
with each conducting sweeps to cover port and starboard sides.

94 depth charges were dropped during Depth Charge Attack No.1.

Evasion consisted of course, depth, and speed changes. Bursts of speed were made when enemy vessel was above
and dropping charges to get out from under.

Enemy appeared to have difficulties accurately tracking once CISCO reaches 500 ft.

MAJOR DAMAGE AND DEFECTS
________________________

No major damage or material defects occurred during this patrol.

Minor damage consisted of few broken light bulbs and glass fixtures due to
depth charge explosions.

SOUND GEAR AND SOUND CONDITIONS
_______________________________

Sound gear and performance were overall satisfactory.

RADAR

SJ Radar performance was over excellent with average detection range
of 20,000 yards.

SD Radar performance was normal with average detection at 12000 yards.

RADIO
______

Radio performance was normal.

MINES
______

Floating, loose, mines were encountered in Torres Strait en route to Darwin. They were
detonated by 20mm gunfire.

HEALTH AND HABITABILITY
_______________________

Overall health and habitability were excellent. Meals were well prepared
and the relatively short duration of patrol contributed.

PERSONNEL
_________

Crew performance and morale were excellent through the duration
of the patrol.

Officers: 7

Chief Petty Officers: 7

Men: 64

Total Crew: 79

Qualified in Submarines during patrol:

1 Officer
10 Men

TORPEDO PERFORMANCE
___________________

Out of twenty four torpedoes expended, eight functioned properly.

Eight confirmed premature explosions and six confirmed 'duds', as well as two more suspected duds
occurred.

Overhaul and pre patrol maintenance of torpedoes was conducted at Brisbane, Australia.

REMARKS
_______

A busy and productive patrol with one destroyer, and three merchant vessels sunk for a total of 25,695 tons. However, due to continuing torpedo malfunctions,
a valuable tanker was missed. Four torpedoes impacted tanker, all duds.
On the follow up attack, four torpedoes prematurely detonated en route to target.

Performance of the boat was excellent. Ability of the BALAO class
to routinely operate at depths in excess of 400 feet provides a real advantage during evasion as enemy active and passive sound gear seems to have much reduced effectiveness tracking submerged vessels at these depth.

AK KENYO MARU sinking after night surface attack (Torpedo Attack No.6)

Playing with the internal free cam to walk around the deck. Snapped this one. External cam was off.

Debris field of Asashio DD sunk in Torpedo Attack No.1. Due to the nature of the attack, a "down the throat shot", went below periscope depth after firing, heard impacts and breaking up noises. By the time came up to periscope depth, debris and lifeboats were all that were visible. This was captured after surfacing.

NAVIGATIONAL AIDES

Lights in the Sibutu Pass were spotted in Tawi Tawi area and aided

ANTI-SUBMARINE COUNTERMEASURES AND EVASION
___________________________________________

DEPTH CHARGE ATTACK NO.1
-------------------------

Enemy DD's in Sibutu Pass detected CISCO on the surface
in excess of 10000 yards at night. Given there is no likely
way CISCO was visually spotted, it is concluded they were radar equipped.

Unable to outrun fleet type destroyers, CISCO submerged.
Enemy Destroyer's were first team and located CISCO
via active sonar at depth of 400 ft. The attack was fairly standard
for Japanese ASW. However, enemy sonar capabilities seemed
improved as they did not seem to lose solid contact with CISCO
until reached a depth of 550 ft.

Evasion consisted of depth and course changes along with "bursts" of speed
when enemy was above, preparing to drop depth charges.

Depth Charge Attack No.2
-------------------------

This depth charge attack conducted by the lone escort,
a Auxiliary Subchaser of about 1000 tons was ineffective.
After CISCO reached 500 ft, the enemy seemed to have difficulty
maintaining solid contact with CISCO. The choppy sea state
and thermal layers no doubt contributed to this as well.

Evasion consisted of depth and course changes along with "bursts" of speed
when enemy was above, preparing to drop depth charges.

DAMAGE AND DEFECTS
_________________________

Damage
------

Serious damage occurred courtesy of aircraft dropped
depth charges/bombs on 5 December. All damage repaired
at sea unless otherwise indicated.

1. Starboard prop shaft-Unable to completely repair
at sea. Speed reduced by 1-1.5 kts.

2. Forward Batteries-Recharge capacity limited to 96 percent.

3. Flooding Aft Torpedo Room. Leaks repaired, two feet of
water pumped out.

4. Flooding Aft Engine Room. Leaks repaired, three feet of water
pumped out.

Defects
-------

No major material defects occurred on this patrol.

SOUND GEAR AND SOUND CONDITIONS
_______________________________

Sound gear functioned well on this patrol.

Sound conditions in area were overall optimal.
Typical sound detection range was in excess of 15000 yards
with precise tracking possible around 15000 yards.

THERMAL LAYERS
______________

Thermal layers were encountered at 148ft, 150 ft, 158 ft.

MINES
_____

No mines were encountered on this patrol.

RADAR
______

SJ

SJ Radar performed well overall with typical
detection range of 18000 yards.

SD

SD radar performance was normal. Several aircraft
were not detected due to flying at or below 1000 ft.
This includes the aircraft which was able to damage
CISCO on 5 December.

RADIO
______

Radio function was normal throughout
the patrol.

TORPEDO PERFORMANCE
____________________

Torpedo performance was much improved
over previous patrols. No premature detonations
occurred nor did any dud torpedoes occur.

SPECIAL MISSION
________________

Approximately six tons of supplies were stored aboard and
transported to Basay, Negros, Philippine Islands.

To make room for these supplies eight torpedoes (four forward, four aft)
were omitted on this patrol.

Mission was conducted according to plan upon sighting of security signals ashore.
Supplies were covertly sent ashore to friendly forces via rubber boat.

Special Mission successfully completed.

PERSONNEL
_________

Crew performance was overall excellent on this patrol.

Crew Stats
-----------

Officers: 7
Chief Petty Officers: 7
Men: 65
Total: 79

One Officer and ten men Qualified in Submarines
on this patrol.

Eight men advanced in Rating on this patrol.

One TM3c and one MoMM3c were detached
at Milne Bay due to combat fatigue.

HEALTH AND HABITABILITY
_______________________

Heath and Habitability on this patrol were overall excellent.
Meals were well prepared and generally favorable weather
for most of patrol.

Damage inflicted by aircraft bombs/depth charges did
cause a period of stress but this was handled well by majority of crew.
Two individuals were "broken" by the situation, sedated, and removed from duty
for several days. These men were detached at Milne Bay.

FACTORS IN DURATION

TORPEDOES:10
FUEL: 30100 gallons
PROVISIONS: 39 days
CREW: Indefinite

Factor in termination of patrol : Fuel Status/Battle Damage.

REMARKS
________

A successful and somewhat eventful patrol. Areas patrolled upon
completion of special mission were surprisingly void of shipping.

Third assigned area did have a convoy pass through but it managed
to evade with course changes. However, if had more fuel and thus time
on station, it is likely would have located further shipping.

Torpedo performance in the lone torpedo attack of this patrol was excellent.
All four torpedoes which found their target detonated properly, sinking
a valuable 10,000 ton enemy tanker. The two misses were assured hits but as last two torpedoes fired,
the tanker was slowed by the four hits, causing a miss. Six torpedoes were fired as a precaution to ensure sinking the tanker as fuel status prevented any further pursuit in event of miss or malfunction.

SD radar's inability to detect contacts at lower altitudes continues
to be a liability on patrol. Damage sustained on 5 December by aircraft
bombs/depth charges were a direct result of SD failing to detect low flying
aircraft at distance to provide enough time to dive safely.

No mines were encountered.

THERMAL LAYERS
________________

Thermal layers were detected at 144, 150, and 190 ft.

ANTI-SUBMARINE COUNTERMEASURES AND EVASION
___________________________________________

Enemy ASW efforts were typical. Although a more powerful
depth charge did appear to be used in both depth charge attacks.

Evasion was normal with frequent changes in depth, course, and speed.

During evasion CISCO reached 650 ft.

SOUND GEAR AND SOUND CONDITIONS
________________________________

Sound gear function was normal with long range detection
in excess of 15,000 yards and precise tracking possible in most
conditions at 10,000 yards.

Sound conditions in are were generally favorable.

MAJOR DAMAGE AND DEFECTS
__________________________

No major defects or damage occurred on this patrol.

REMARKS
_________

A productive and busy patrol with six ships sunk for35,567 tons, in a area that since Fall of 1942 has been a "target rich" environment and remains so. With the sinking of two fuel laden southbound tankers, no doubt en route
to Rabaul to provide much needed aviation gasoline for aircraft based there, as our aerial offensive against the area continues. Depriving aircraft there of two tankers worth of fuel, sure made a "dent"in their operations.

Expectations of the new MK 18 electric torpedo were overall me, given a MK 18 was responsible. or the sinking of a 14280 ton Auxiliary Cruiser on this patrol. Obviously, the lack of a visible wake provides a advantage. However, the relatively slow speed and smaller warhead hampered overall effectiveness against other targets, as one large AK took two and sailed on,
while another hit with two MK 18, required follow up shots with MK 14 to ensure her sinking.

Ineffectiveness of enemy ASW on this patrol was quite surprising. While have seemed to deploy a heavier and more effective depth charge, the lack of vigor in their counterattacks was surprising, but appreciated.
