Not navy, not infantry, not aerial warfare, not artillery.
But it is about military. Hm. Logistics?

Belay that. Farrier's axe of the royal horse guards? "The spike on the axe was used to put severely injured horses out of their misery as humanely as possible. In order to account for all animals killed in action, the sharp axe blade was used to chop off the hoof of the deceased horse that was marked with the its regimental number. Army farriers still carry axes like this at ceremonial occasions - fortunately they do not use them anymore." [eeeek]

Well done, Catfish! @ Aktung - I think we'll have to agree to differ - I'd call it a long handle, since I'd say that a shaft is most usually for pushing or rotating something at the end Some are curved like this, which I'd argue makes it best described as a handle. I thought it safer to call it a handle (never heard of an axe shaft) although now you bring it up I do agree that a pole-axe is on the end of a shaft. But that's a different thing anyway

I have never heard of this before, some heavy device being used to kill your mount and then dismember the corpse for a hoof.
I read that in the british cavalry - since horses were expensive - some sold their horse to then claim it being dead and get a new one, to make some money. When this method rose to attention of some officers, this.. device was invented. One of the hooves was imprinted with the military "stock" number, and cavalyrymen claiming their horse to be dead had to provide evidence (read: the hoof with said number). Nothing beats a well-organised military. Ahem. At some point i was looking for cavalry axes and ceremonial presentations, and axxidentally found it.

^^ re Aktungbby: Yes, twin prop plane/aircraft
^ Spot on, that went fast! 'Alice', a new battery-powered commercial aircraft that can carry nine passengers up to 250 miles. In the news from one week ago.. made in Israel. "Alice, the World’s First All-Electric Passenger Jet, Just Aced Her Maiden Flight" https://www.popularmechanics.com/fli...tric-aircraft/ https://www.eviation.com/ Well done. Over to Eichhörnchen

^ Well clearly a prop plane but being Catfish it had to be something über-tekky. So I googled 'laminar flow aircraft' but on that page was a reference to electric flight and some very modern shapes - and this would have to be even more of the moment. Searching that subject brought the answer up immediately
So what is this?
