Default SH3 constant shallow waters

Hi,

I have set sail from Kiel toward AN54 near the UK for my 1st campaign and all the ocean so far is so shallow, about 15-20ft, I'm barely able to dive to perescope depth. I'm still sailing round the small islands and land mass in the baltic sea area, but even still the waters should still be deeper surely? It's literally all just flat seabed a few feet below my sub. If I needed to dive I'd be in trouble.

What's going on?

Так и должно быть. Балтика сама по себе не глубокая.

Here, for the non-Russian speaker among us ..

''That's the way it should be. The Baltic itself is not deep.''

And I approve the above !

I believe that the developers got most depths in Silent Hunter 3 pretty accurate.

Shallow coastal European waters were a problem for U-Boats in WWII, and there was no way around it. Especially after 1941, as British/Commonwealth escorts began to get better at underwater detection.

When I play SH3 I sometimes have to let a convoy go at certain points on the map, due to lack of depth.

Late in the war, Alberich made things better in shallow waters for the subs lucky enough to receive it. But it was far from a cure-all.

I do the same; any convoy in shallow waters gets a pass. Until the late war coastal campaign anyway, which is all about sailing in shallow waters.
Otherwise plenty of others in deep water that won't be so dangerous to deal with.
