With the copies of RL orders I have, a person would need a notepad, legal-sized, to hold the orders and charts they carried, sometimes in sealed envelopes "Not to be opened until on-site", initially with only a "lat/long" location to go to. The Narwhal and Nautilus were often tasked with 3 and 4 objectives, half of which might be cancelled enroute, and replaced with other objective locations, due to countering Japanese movements, or the capture of guerrilla groups. We're trying to get as much "authenticity" in to that roughly 850 characters the game allows. But the limit on characters does not appear to be set in stone, and is a function, as you say, of the "window" size for the "paper", and is a combination of lines, words, characters & line breaks (my opinion). As in an earlier post, if I put one character and a carriage return (using the keyboard) on each of 20 lines, they all display fine. I can add more characters to each line, but when I hit roughly 742 characters, I have to drop a line. That trend continues all of the way up the page. The more characters, the fewer lines allowed. It seems the more you fill a line with up to 60 characters, the fewer lines allowed, but as I mentioned, I did have a "short" orders text that bombed, most likely due to my use of double "pipes" for a forced carriage return to separate sections of text for Objectives A, B & C. The game did not like that. Removed 2 characters, and it was fine. When I removed the double "pipes" and went with singles separating the sections, it was fine. My guess is that the "pipe" character is worth the whole line of 60 characters. There is no other explanation - in my mind. anyway... strange stuff, this game...

Yes, the SH5 editor does work for that, but the "logic" behind the placement is elsewhere. The menu ini file "places" the text, but does not determine the actual formatting of the text, only where it displays. If I remember, the actual text is either I4 or I5 (the pages build "backwards"), but with no apparent error checking anywhere, if it does not fit on the page, the game immediately CTDs - but how to "count" to prevent that?

I have tried the Ctrl-N thing to get a whether refresh or a new "dice roll" after four hours, if i understood it right. But i had 15m/s without rain for the first two weeks of March and 7 - 15 Meters with heavy prescr...rain and heavy fog, for the last two weeks of march. But ok, don't want to brag, but i have watched the "Werner Sobe Sonarvids", like 15 years ago.
I also used to sail with no map updates, but then one is really busy, and what do i have a boat full of experts for.

I allways draw circles around the airports, but in the middle of the ocean a scout plane caught us in the night, came down Stuka-like in an 80 degrees angle for the center of the sub and... nothing. I guess he tried to spit on us, at least i would have tried.

1. No two computers are alike, and no two runs of the game on the same computer are alike. You never know when the game or machine wants to take a holiday... The main things with weather are not doing high TC when you do hit a storm, since the TC seems to interfere with the chance of a roll. It can be tough to notice when you hit a storm though, but watch for the boat's speed to fluctuate, along with rudder changes if you have set a course. Slow down to 512x max. Also, there can be times where you go from storm to clear and back to storm, and do not notice due to TC use. Shelling out to windows will also do that, since each time you go out, the game's "clock", which is based on a DirectX v9 dll library call, gets re-set. But "weather" is not realistic in SH4. I would rather be in a storm with somewhat limited visibility, than the dead-calm you can get stuck in just as badly. It can be near-suicide to attack when it's calm.

2. In a regular FotRSU activation, you are dealing with the Stock game's "Dud" rate. So you do have to have the choice enabled on the Career Captain's Office "Options" "Game Play" menu to encounter duds. Also, in the AddInModzPak are several choices of dud rate modifiers. The "650_MoreDudz" is probably the closest to "real life" percentages, and most of the torpedoes do have issues, including the Mark 10 running 5' deep. It amazes me that BuOrd would not have taken the weight of a real warhead, as compared to a practice head, into consideration when they did their settings "recommendations" ("Do this or else").

3. The Mark 23 at first costs renown, but when the "fix" is in, it represents the "repaired" Mark 14 and becomes free. But there are still deep runners, duds, and circle runner chances. Just not as high. You'll also notice that CapnScurvy has the warhead default from a magnetic pistol to impact pistol about then.

4. Yes Martha, we have no bananas, and the Japanese subs that carried planes do "launch" (spawn) airplanes. They will do it based upon your sub's detection. In other words, if a shore battery, a ship, a picket, a plane etc., happens to see you, and the sub is close enough, it will spawn a plane that will come your direction, with a pre-calculate angle error, similar to what the guns have. If it's time for their radar to be active, they will bee-line for you and attempt to put the whoop on you. Didja hear it "screaming" as it came in? Some of the planes have that now. Sounds like a Stuka, 'cause it is that sound (thanks Jeff!!!)

5. Blackadder is required study on this team... as well as a few other shows... lol - must have the proper "chip chip cheerio and all that!"

the refit means that you received a new conning tower (turm for you german chaps) and, in most instances, it is automatic unlike an upgrade to a new boat. in some modsets, a refit (new turm) causes problems.
