Default New Project - Pacific Subs Strategy game?

I've been toying with the idea of kicking off a new development project for a strategic submarine game set in the Pacific during WWII. I haven't really sat down and thought through many of the details yet, but I envision a game in the Uncommon Valor/War in the Pacific mould, but dedicated to the submarine campaign. The detail level is still unknown to me as I haven't really dug into the mechanics yet, but I would like to hear from anyone interested in participating in such a project.

I work as a developer and would like to use this project to serve as a way of deepening my professional skills in the language and development tools I use professionally (C#/Visual Studio), but I'm open to suggestions. Is there any interest on the board to participate? This will be a long term thing as I have both a full time job and a more than full time family to take care of, so the end product would not be whipped up in six months in a massive flurry of work.

Come on now, lets do this. You know you want to.

I'll help where needed.. I'm more interested in the art department than coding, though I do a bit of C# myself.

Might I recommend Unity3d as a good (free!) 3d engine to start out with. You can then use either C# or JavaScript.

Great! Art competence is something I am sorely lacking! Although I'm not sure a 3D engine such as Unity is actually needed in this type of "grand" strategy game. I am in any case going to give this idea a bit more of a think through so a design document can be started.

RTS or turn based?

The idea is to manage the subs/flotillas from a SUBPAC perspective, or as commander in the own submarine?

Pausable real-time would probably be the way to go, and you (i.e. the player) would be essentially be ComSubPac sending your boats out on patrol, rotating skippers (at cost of some sort), fulfilling strategic directives etc.

Okay, I mis-interpreted your post.

You're right, you wouldn't need an engine like Unity3d.

I still offer my services

Let me know what you have in mind/need and I'll start.

With some help from Dowly on the forum I hope to create bigger, better things than my previous works that are scattered around on this forum.

I will start on a design document tomorrow or during the weekend. I'll also see if I can fin a good lace to host the project that we can use as a meeting point and documents and source code.

Anyone else up for this? Programmers, artists, project co-ordination? Just give me shout.

Slowly but surely I'd say. I've brainstormed quite a bit and thrown together a very rough draft regarding the technical aspects primarily. It needs to be detailed quite a bit and the mechanics part of it isn't even started yet.

Hey Daft,

How are you doing? I've been polishing up on my old graphic abilities and ready to commence work when you're ready.

Check out the Art thread in General Topics if you have time

Chad,

Sorry for not responding earlier! I've been swamped at work lately, and the design document is still in the same state as it was for my last status update. Things look a little better on the work front now, so I was planning to get back to it this weekend. I'll give the thread a look!
