They do hunt insects but communicate with grunts, wails, squeals, snorts, twitters, growls, whistles, and shrieks... no echo radar and R 4 legged.

Not flat-tailed enough; and they don't swim I believe; they avoid rainy weather. Certain predators besides leopards, Cobras, adders, Caracals, and wild dogs prey on them and two predators specialize on these critters. They are not kosher and are considered a pest in certain areas. There! I've probably given it away!

Bingo! the Rock Hyrax it is! distantly related to the elephant!??? Testicles do not decend out of the abdomen as with pachyderms and those front incisors are actually little tusks... Verreaoux Eagles hunt them specifically. Over to Jimbuna

I should have told him earlier-Already from start I knew it was a Rock Hyrax. Have just seen a program about them.

Since I have no interest in winning I send a PB to a friend telling him what animal it was.

Too late

Markus

Congratulations to Jim

Lol i was thinking about a "Klippschliefer", but i was not sure and I did not find a translation; but this was before i changed to the wrong bat proposal..
The translation is indeed "Rock Hyrax", since the last century science now runs those animals under the name Procavia capensis

I should have known.. we saw them in Namibia and I read about them in a german book "Wenn es Krieg gibt, gehen wir in die Wueste" ~ "If there is war we'll go to the desert":

"In September 1935, two young men, newly qualified doctors of geology, arrive on the coast of southwest Africa. They have left Nazi Germany, are starting geological research in the Naukluft Mountains and are exploring water resources for the farmers.
The Second World War catches up with them, for fear of the impending internment as 'enemy foreigners', Henno Martin and Hermann Korn flee into the desert, where they fight for physical survival for more than two years. Hunger and thirst torment them, their changing accommodations, provisional, primitive, form the starting point for changing hunting luck in search of food and water.
They live almost like people of prehistoric times, marveling at the barren beauty of the desert, whose extreme tension between life and death leads them to new insights into the growth and decay of nature and humanity."

They have to give up when one of them gets seriously sick, however their reports are a great read.

edit Ok i should have put this in the useless facts thread

I believe there is some cloth-like material involved.

The friend I picked was the last to post a comment in this thread, when I read the latest comment - It could have been an another friend.
It just happens to be this friend.
