It’ll throw lead but from what I understand black powder doesn’t generate the chamber pressures one achieves with smokeless making the semi-auto action unreliable.

Plus back powder is dirty and will gunk things up pretty fast.

Thanks for the replies so far.

So I was just about to order a CVA Scout in 45-70 after seeing how poorly most 450 bushmaster bolt actions seem to feed, but then I started looking at frugal night vision rifle scope options and it seems like 45-70 isn't so great for shock in regard to scopes? What rifle & night vision rifle scope would you chose if you wanted to hunt wild hogs on your own ranch property at night in Texas? Probably only taking one animal at a time.

I've already got a bolt action .308 that I could probably use, but I kind of liked the idea of having some artillery.

If peep sights were good enough for the old buffalo hunters shooting from 200 or more yards away. They ought to be good enough to hit the boiler room of a hog from 50. If night vision is a problem just eat more carrots.

My cousin Tommy has a ranch outside of Austin and he uses an AR type rifle chambered for 6.5mm Creedmoor. I'm not sure what brand his night vision gear is but you'd want to use a thermal imaging sight in that situation.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking I might just see how the bolt action .308 that I already own does. Maybe some helmet mounted night vision. Thermal looks kind of expensive.

You can pick up a nice ATN scope used for around $300+
Haven't check prices since I sold mine. Very nice Units once you learn them.
.308 is more then enough. There's people dropping them with Air Guns in Texas!

If you’re looking for an inexpensive rifle look at Diamond Back firearms you can pick up a DB 15 for around $700 cabbages. Nice thing about that you can find 5.56 and .223 dang near everywhere and will fit a lot of different optics.

So what does a hog hunting helmet look like anyways? Inquiring minds want to know!

I guess they look like this. Sounded like a cheaper alternative to buying something that can withstand a 45-70 kick.https://www.pewpewtactical.com/helme...hooting-setup/

But can you see your gun sights with that thing on? It doesn't help to see the your prey if you can't aim at them.

Video @ minute 5:30 why do you even need night vision? ‘I don’t know, it’s rad as hell we don’t live in a world of reason’. In other words you don’t need to spend a dime on night vision to hunt at night.

I guess I would also add monocular NVG can cause a helluva lot of eye strain. And whether they be mono or binocular when you turn them off you wont be able see squat out one or both eyes until they adjust to natural night vision.
