Default Help with a decision

I'm sure that this question is nothing new to this forum and is asked either yearly or near it; but I wasn't able to find one recently this year or it didn't pop up for me. However, I've been out of the SUBSIM world for awhile and haven't played either SH III or SH V in a range of 8 to 10 years.

With that being said, from today standards (2023), what would be the route to go. I've got plenty of time to sink into this on my off time and during down time on shifts and have been in need of a good investment of time.

The two parts is a two part question, the first is:

If I was to play Vanilla, which one would run through steam properly and be worth the time? (I like logging my hours)

Second:

If I was to play with MODs, which would be a better time investment, and what MODsa are worth it? (Still through steam)

Thank you for the help.

For a vanilla game..choose sh3 because sh5 has to many annoying bugs.

I have played all the Silent Hunter games...And in my opinion sh5 with the wolves of steel mod is the best sh game.

Sounds great, I look forward to sh3 vanilla however, I may have fallen face first down the hatch into modding.

As for sh5 and the Wolves of Steel mod, does that help fix the bugs or are they still fairly persistent? I've been seeing a lot of complaints regarding captains having an issue getting the game to launch first try and needing launch an upwards of 15+ times.

There are still a couple of minor bugs in the game...But for me the game is super stable and still the best subsim today.
