I'd suggest SH4, since it's the only one with US boats.

radar Re: Welcome aboard...

JohnBark10!

Most would say SH3...

Myself, I would say of SH4, as it has better detailed damage models that give it a close to realistic feel in admiring your handiwork when on the attack. This coupled with a crew roster, that doesn't need hand holding near as much as its predecessor.

Combine that with the ability to mod it out for U-boat, fleet boat action... & well...

The best copy of SH4 to have would be :

Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific: Uboat Missions v1.5

This is the version to run with...

Hope this helps...

I'd say SH4 also, definitely not sh5, I really hate the first person walking around and doing things. Sh3 is okay, spent a lot of time playing it but SH4 is just right.

I suggest whatever you decide there are multiple super mods for each. SH5 would be limited in that category. So look at all the options do multiple installs. With SH4 I have had less CTD but more attributed to my mod soups with SH3. You could conceivably spend more time doing mod installs and tweaking than actually playing, careful of that rabbit hole. As mentioned before if you are looking for both US and German boats than SH4 might be best. See you on the other side......
