Hey Dowly, just turn north and leave the grid and keep going, I went up east of Greenland. I always wanted to see what was passed the grid.

The Journey North... A Tale Of A Brave Crew...

it was quite an experience... sit down , let me tell you how it went...

as i remember it, there was little shipping traffic... then, there was no shipping traffic... no airplanes overhead... the world starts getting gloomier and darker... even during the daytime, it never seemed to get much lighter than an bleak overcast...

soon, even the radio becomes void of human voices... and the static takes on an almost other worldly sound... as if it were the voices of the siren of the north, calling the sub towards her... i suddenly realized that i shouldn't be here... but i continued with my ship and crew... i continued north... north towards the arctic ice...

5 days later...

it's gotten darker... much darker... not quite as dark as night is supposed to be, but an eerie grayish sorta darkeness... the type of darkness that sea monster and other unseen creatures choose to dwell in... i go below... to the more familiar confines of the submarine...

almost another week...

nothing but dark brooding seas... and bad weather... is there really any ice up here... we should be seeing it by now... i find myself wondering... what's happening back in Wilhelmshaven... that pretty nurse that i met there, the one that saw me off at the docks... is she still there waiting for me...

it's the middle of spring in Germany now... the grass should be green and the flowers in bloom... aaahhh, but Germany is a long ways off right now... and i start to wonder if i will ever see it again...

suddenly, through a break in the bleak overcast, i see something... ON THE SURFACE!!! BEARING GREEN 030... then it comes into sight... i finally see it... THE ARCTIC ICE PACK DEAD AHEAD!!! i announce...

magnificent i say to myself... they've modeled the north polar ice...

i gaze at it in amazement for a while, momentarily forgetting the bleakness and darknees and bad weather that surrounds me, glowing in a momentary warmth of self satisfaction... i've arrived... gone where no man, or at least very few men, have gone before...

then i completely loose all sense of reality, and order the dive and a turn towards the ice... SLOW 'ER DOWN A BIT, CONTINUE DIVING, DOWN TO 60 METERS is the order... WE ARE GOING UNDER THE ICE...

in the back of my mind i know that this is sheer madness... iii am suddenly aware of the stares from the men in the centrale... the looks on their faces show that they too think this is just a lil crazy... but i ask myself, what if... what if....

i continued under the ice... totally unprepared for the sudden violent WHAMMMM!!! that suddenly occured...

we mus've hit the ice... DEEPER CHIEF!!! TAKE 'ER DEEPER... WE MUST GET UNDER THE ICE!!! but ALLis to no avail... again the ship collided with what appeared to be a solid formation... the damage we sustained at this depth forced me to blow ballast and attempt to reach the surface...

the ship hesitated for a while as the torpedo room crew fought to stop the severe flooding casualty that was a result of the collision... but then i hear... SHE'S RISING... YAAAYYYY....

it looks like i'm gonna make it... what a pity it would've been to make it this far north, only to die deep under the frozen sea...

after a few days of skirting the 'ice' looking for an underwater passage, i decide to turn south and head back to the world that i am more familiar with... a warmer world, a world with sun and light... i am suddenly anxious to leave this unearthly place... ENGINES AHEAD FULL!!!

we start back home...

almost a week and a day later
we have arrived back into the lower lats, the days are now longer... the sun was shining... and i went to the bridge to enjoy a smoke and some fresh air... ahhh the sun felt good as i puffed on one of the last cigarettes that i had remaining... the alien arctic environment was now just a distant memor.... AAAALLLLLARRRRRMMM!!!!!

AIRCRAFT SPOTTED!!!! CLEAR THE BRIDGE... PERPARE TO DIVE!!!!

i rushed down below along with the rest of the bridge crew as the men took their diving stations and the boat started to take on an angle...

and as we started down i remember saying to myself... ahhhh, it's so good to be back home...

I need to go there, having read so much about it. I could be a modern day Peary or Cook (hah!)

I thought there would be too much ice and I wouldn't get anywhere near it. You say "the edge", how close did you manage to get?
