Destroyer and helicopters

I'm watching a livestream where a member(I think it is)play our new game Destroyer the U-boat Hunter, when I came to think of Helicopter being a part of a destroyer.

My question

When became these two object so to say one unit. When became helicopters a part of a destroyer or frigate ?
