Default AOD Patrol Reports

Well, I did it. I haven't been playing SH3 because I want to run all the latest greatest mods and I have to wait for a new computer. I don't like waiting for the long loading times just so I can sit and whine about all the stuff I'm missing.

I haven't been playing SH4 because, while it's better than SH3 in most departments, it doesn't have all the cool mods, so the harbors look naked and that drives me nuts.

I haven't been playing SH5 because I refuse to buy it until the DRM is completely gone.

So my solution, after reading Howard313's thread on torpedo problems, is to play Aces Of The Deep again.

Why? It looks awful.
Answer: looks aren't everything.

It sounds awful.
Answer: Not really. It's got nothing on the modern games, but everything's there.

If you don't play the others because of the missing goodies, why play one that has none of those at all?
Answer: Because it doesn't pretend to. In the SH series the goodies help make up for the lack of gameplay. In AOD the gameplay is nearly perfect, so the other stuff is not needed.

It's old.
Answer: It loads in about 15 seconds, it saves well every time, Time Compression works perfectly, the AI is so random it seems real. It may not look so hot, but it still plays as well as anything out there.

Truth to tell, I'll probably drop it as soon as I have a newer computer, but for now this is fun.

So, here is my first patrol report.

ShII had some things that weren't turned on in SH3 or weren't added. You know what they are SS.

And imho were a loss for SH3. And maybe for SH4.

Unless you were playing ten years ago I doubt it. Have you gotten stuck in the mud yet? I died that way once, and came close a couple of times.

Have fun getting away from it all.

It's true, they keep dropping the things that work. But I don't miss SH2 at all, given all the crappy things that didn't work. The original, on the other hand...well, if I keep at this until I get to 1942 I'll be loading up SH1 as well.

Nice trip down memory lane reading those reports! I can't get caod to work on my modern rig, but I still regularly play the theme tune as I managed to get hold of it converted by someone to mp3. One of the most evocative tunes of them all

Regards all, and good luck with the move SS.

To intensify action against Britain and France, U-boats are
now permitted to operate unrestrictedly in the area west of Scotland
and the whole area off the French Atlantic coast, zones E and F, all
ships are now allowed to be attacked on sight, without warning. This
includes unescorted nuetrals and passenger ships, though caution

neutral ships (Russian, Japanese, Italian, Danish and Spanish).

by Britain after the occupation of Norway, Belgium, and Holland are
to be considered as enemy vessels, but attacks on sight are only
permitted if these ships are seen to be armed. The rules of

Second career. Since AOD makes you start in a Type II and work your way up, I always run three careers. One will stay in the Type II, one will take a Type VII when offered and the third a Type IX.

As a result of this thread I have started playing AOD again, what an immersive simulation really enjoying myself...maybe a little more than SH3

Cool! I go back and forth myself. sometimes the pure thrill of AOD is all I need, and sometimes I have to have the feeling SH3 gives when I sail in and out of those fully-realized ports. At see I still like the visuals provided by the newer games, but AOD and SHCE still turn me on.

Oh, and WELCOME ABOARD!

Thanks for the welcome, I am struggling with eye candy (SH3 & SH4) versus immersion and I am finding myself gravitating back towards legacy sims (AOD, Janes 688I and SH1) not out of nostalgia but simply that they are more "fun" than what's currently available.
