Monday, 28 December 1942 - Gotenhafen-Oxhöft

Work-up's and Trials with the U.A.K. (Kpt.z.S.R. BRÄUTIGAM), the 2nd Training Division (U.L.D.; Freg.Kpt.d.R. Ernst HASSHAGEN) and 22nd U-Flotilla (Korvkpt. Wilhelm Ambrosius):

Dry-Run Exercises with Machinery/Mechanics; Weapons; Torpedoes.

U 86 (Kptlt. Walter Schug) situation report: 23.12. north, east and south coast of Flores thoroughly searched for torpedoed steamer. Apart from the gunboat "Velho" nothing was sighted. From 25 -28.12. submarine was on the boundary of the territorial waters Ponta Delgada. Sighted: 1 steamer on course of 1700, 2 coastal freighters entering port and 4
Swedish Red Cross ships
. Boat requested permission for protracted return voyage. He was ordered to start back via BD 98 and search the area for torpedoed vessels that have had to fall out of convoy. Continue voyage according to fuel position.

The boats which had been waiting some 10 days in CD 90 for supplies, i.e. U 508 - 154 - 163 - 129 refueled from "Milkcow" U 463 (KrvKpt. Leo Wolfbauer) and are continuing their homeward voyage.

The homeward bound "Rhakotis" (Trans: Blockade runner)
was picked up at 0900 in CE 1388 by the submarines U 410 - 409 - 621, who were waiting there. Because of the nearby convoy the ship took a northerly course until 0400, then steered for point "Raummass". For some inexplicable reason U 409 (Oblt. Hanns-Ferdinand Massmann) reported about 1900 that he had given up the convoy duty because of complete breakdown of radar interception gear and was operating against Convoy No. 72. The commander will have to account for this arbitrary behavior on his return. U 659 (Kptlt. Hans Stock) was ordered to act as substitute, but could not reach the homeward bound vessel during the night.

U 648 (Ltnt.z.S.d.R. Peter-Arthur Stahl) conducts exercises with the AGRU-Front Hela.

Work-up's and Trials with the U.A.K. (Kpt.z.S.R. BRÄUTIGAM), the 2nd Training Division (U.L.D.; Freg.Kpt.d.R. Ernst HASSHAGEN) and 22nd U-Flotilla (Korvkpt. Wilhelm Ambrosius):

Dry-Run Exercises with Machinery/Mechanics; Weapons; Torpedoes.

U 124 (Kptlt. Johann Mohr) tanker convoy last position ED 9694 at 0800 29.12., course 70°, 11 knots. Misses fired, contact lost when forced by plane to submerge. No air or sea patrol in Tabaca (Tobago). Freighter entering port sunk in ED 9964 (4,000 GRT).

Convoy No. 72
(ONS.154):
Contact was maintained by Group "Spitz". Convoy was reported as 10 steamers in double line abreast. U 260 (Kptlt. Hubertus Purkhold) was detected during a day attack. U 455 (Kptlt. Hans-Martin Scheibe) fired a double miss. U 591 (Kptlt. Hans-Jürgen Zetzsche) was forced to move away. Last report at 1830. Contact was lost through bad visibility.
During the night flares were reported several times. Probably the flares were dropped by escort planes at some distance in order to mislead the submarines. U 225 (Oblt. Wolfgang Leimkühler) reported miss fire at "Q-ship" with plane on board. U 615 (Kptlt. Ralph Kapitzky) fired 5 single shots at the same ship with no effect, torpedo nets presumed. Ship employed plane and worked at night with a shallow M.T.B.

U 86
(Kptlt. Walter Schug) was ordered to make a protracted return via BD 98 (Position of sinkings by Group "Spitz").

The loss of U 357
(Kptlt. Adolf Kellner; last attacking homeward bound convoy in AM) and of U 356 (Oblt. Günther Ruppelt; last attacking Convoy No. 72, Group "Spitz") must be assumed. Boats have not replied to repeated call-ups.

U 648 (Ltnt.z.S.d.R. Peter-Arthur Stahl) conducts exercises with the AGRU-Front Hela.

Allied convoy RA-51 departs Kola Inlet near Murmansk, Russia. To the west, U-354 (Kptlt. Karl-Heinz Herbschleb) detects Allied convoy JW-51B; Admiral Erich Raeder orders Lützow, Admiral Hipper, and six destroyers to sortie from Altafjord, Norway to intercept.

Convoy No. 72 (ONS.154):
At 1229 U 455
(Kptlt. Hans-Martin Scheibe) sighted the convoy in CE 1211. At 1850 boat reported it in BD 7956 and finally at 2100 in BD 7943. Contact was then lost for good. The other boats did not pick it up, as they were operating on the more southerly course of the convoy. At 0510 U 455 reported from BD 7878 a wide range hydrophone bearing in 230°. Follow up had no results. The hunt continued.
U 435 (Kptlt. Siegfried Strelow) sank the "Q" ship in CE 3178.
It had already been unsuccessfully attacked by U 225 (Oblt. Wolfgang Leimkühler) and U 615 (Kptlt. Ralph Kapitzky) and was probably the "rescue ship" of the convoy. It was somewhat of the "Waldemar Kophamel" class, carrying a seaplane, strong armament and depth charge throwers.
Some 300 to 400 survivors
(probably from steamers in the convoy that had been sunk) were drifting on overloaded rafts and in the water. On account of the worsening weather conditions it must be assumed that a great many were lost.

U 217
(VIID; Kptlt. Kurt Reichenbach-Klinke) Radar interception gear faulty, boat received the requested operational area EO 30 - 90.

U 109
(Kptlt. Heinrich Bleichrodt) Commander no longer fully fit for duty. Was ordered to continue operation. If necessary to hand over the command to the 1st Watch Keeping Officer (Oblt. Joachim Schramm).

U 648 (Ltnt.z.S.d.R. Peter-Arthur Stahl) conducts exercises with the AGRU-Front Hela.

Dry-Run Exercises with Machinery/Mechanics; Weapons; Torpedoes.

Battle of the Barents Sea takes place between the British Royal Navy and the KM. Royal Navy destroyers drive off Lützow, Admiral Hipper and six destroyers from attacking convoy JW-51B, loosing destroyer HMS Achates and minesweeper HMS Bramble, while we loose destroyer Z16 Friedrich Eckoldt. The Führer is furious, ordering the scrapping of the KM battle fleet, saying his battleships are useless "as much as scrap iron". Großadmiral Admiral Raeder resignes.

Convoy No. 72 (ONS.154):
Contact was not reestablished during the day. As only 5 boats still had sufficient fuel to continue operating the convoy hunt was broken off at dusk. Intended schedule: U 117 (XB; Korvkpt. Hans-Werner Neumann) is to refuel the 5 boats with the most fuel in the sea area reached. Later they are to operate in AJ with 3 boats en route to the area from Western France in order to pick up an "SC" convoy.

U 175
(Kptlt. Heinrich Bruns) reported situation in ET 3710 - 40. Single ship sighted in 3715, 90°. When attack was made on a single destroyer boat was followed for 7 hours with hydrophones and Asdic. No depth charges dropped.

U 217
(VIID; Kptlt. Kurt Reichenbach-Klinke) has been allocated operational area EO 10 - 60 as requested, because of Radar interception gear breakdown. U 214 (VIID; Kptlt. Günther Reeder) has taken over "Reichenbach's" task, i.e. a sortie to Aruba.

The 1st Panzer Division withdraws from the Terek area in southern Russia, to prevent encirclement by the Soviet Salsk-Rostov and Mozdok-Stavropol Offensive Operations.

U 164
(Korvkpt. Otto Fechner) reported: Sank Swedish vessel "Brageland" (2,608 tons) in conformity with prize regulations course 320° (in FB 3815).

U 438
(Kptlt. Rudolf Franzius) is returning after intake of water in air supply trunk when making a trial dive at A plus 40.According to their fuel reserves homeward bound boats were instructed to stalk the convoy sighted by FW 200 at 1500 in BE 5942, course 240°, speed 8 knots. If these boats made contact, it was intended that battle-worthy boats lying farther off should be guided in. Correction of position showed that the enemy was in BE 9218 at 1625.
Thus it was very probably a Gibraltar convoy, and so the presence of cruisers was to be expected. As no operationally ready submarines were available for this area, the operation was broken off.

U 628
(Oblt. Heinrich Hasenschar) refueled from U 117 (XB; Korvkpt. Hans-Werner Neumann) in BD 9489. U 117 will supply U 524, 591, 435, 336, 225, 615 according to plan."Rhakotis" (Blockade-runner from Japan to Europe) was in action with an English destroyer in BF 7157 and scuttled herself at 1700, her escort submarines were then detailed to search for survivors.
The case of "Rhakotis" has again showed that submarines are unable to protect blockade runners or carry out reconnaissance for them. Attention is again drawn to repeated situation reports on this subject. The misleading character of remote reconnaissance is shown by the fact that U 410 (KrvKpt. Kurt Sturm) thought she was 40 miles off the vessel she was protecting and when she unintentionally came up with "Rhakotis", reported her as an enemy merchant ship.

He 111 aircraft stationed at Morozovskaya Airfield, Rostov Oblast, Russia, are evacuated. Since the aircraft can not take all the equipment and supplies with them, commanding officer of KG 55 Oberstleutnant Ernst Kühl remains behind with a small staff in the hopes that the ground troops will be able to blunt the Soviet offensive, so that the aircraft can return.

The Romanian "Conducător of the Nation", Prime Minister Ion Antonescu, meets with The Führer to discuss the ensuing disaster in Stalingrad.

U 620 (Oblt. Heinz Stein) 27.12 definitely established "Q" ship working with patrol vessels in CF 8325. Double miss fired.

U 124 (Kptlt. Johann Mohr): No shipping on any steamer routes. Regular day reconnaissance up to 400 miles from Trinidad, no location. Bombs.
