Default dds files v J3D

Can anyone tell what the difference between a DDS file and J3D file is? I'm trying my hand at skinning at the moment and am wondering if I need to convert a skinned DDS file into a J3D file in order to compress the decompressed file?

Help needed.

the dds file is the texture the j3d file is the actual 3d model.

No you do not need to convert a dds to j3d no is it even possable...
