No name mentioned, I guess they did not have any.
Maybe those two freighters that were rebuilt, but not those smaller ones like on the picture.

is the picture in the puzzle from the book cropped, showing the Principressa Malfada while being colliered by the puzzle vessel? My search under "photo: Principressa Malfada being coaled by collier vessel " is zilch!

^ uh what?
In my book there is a photo with the Principessa "colliered" (does this word even exist?) by one of these, yes. And Google image also finds it, provided i post the whole picture of what I posted here. Which is why I only posted a detail It was a new system that sped up the coaling of ships using coal to fire their steam engines. Which is why this system became obsolete when oil was used for heating the boilers (and later the Diesel-engined ships appeared). Beforehand the coaling was done by men carrying coal buckets, which would take up to 24 hours for a ship like the P. Mafalda. With this new system coaling was done in less than six hours.

...a 'collier' is a vessel specifically for the purpose of transporting coal in bulk...therefore your puzzle's vessel must needs be a collier. If looked up on Google, 'collier' specifically reflects the river Tyne and Newcastle as one of the earliest coal shipping ports with such ships; methinks our resident Banks Line 3rd engineer would have solved it by now!? Based on your comment above, I'm on the right track...just a few trestles short?? The great lakes WWII training carrier, USS LANGLEY was a converted collier
