Default A question about The Enemy Below

I love this movie and have seen it several times, when the captain of the Haines says he could be pulled into a fight with a German raider,is he reffering to a Hansa Class ship?
He says that it could out gun and out run his Buckley Class DD,I know it is just a movie, but was just curious if this is true and is he reffering to a Hansa or something else...thanks

I guess he refers to a german raider like "Graf Spee" or "Admiral Sheer" - so called pocketbattleships of the German Kriegsmarine. No match for a DD.

Admiral Sheer

Default commerce raiders

Even the commerce raiders e.g. ATLANTIS had a very strong armament of 6-8 6'' guns and several torpedo tubes. These could also tie down a BUCKLEY class DE (or CANNON which is the correct in ENEMY BELOW). Remember that KORMORAN sunk the Australian light cruiser HMAS PERTH (if I remember well the name!).

Sunk just out of Perth, so not too bad a guess.

Robert Mitchem says about the U-Boat from the intel message "RVing with German Raider "S", "Q" or "M"." which makes me think its a merchant converson and not a normal warship. IE they only know it exists not its name or specifics.

I could be totaly wrong though...

Admiral Sheer
Is this a pre-nazi photo? Look at the flag.

It looks like the Armed Forces State Flag used by the German military in 1933.

http://flagspot.net/flags/de1933.html

Admiral Scheer was launched in April 1933, which would fit the time frame for the flag. On the other hand she wasn't commissioned until November 1934, so in '33 I wouldn't think she would have been that 'finished'.
