Default The 2nd SUBSIM Hunt: Sign-Up and Info

Welcome to the 2nd SUBSIM Hunt:
Escape from HMS Thanatus

The Backstory

Corpses float in the pitch black of HMS Thanatus' lower decks. The few
survivors huddle together in an air pocket and listen to the strange sounds
from the abyss on the other side of the hull. Help might be on the way, but
for some, their fate is already sealed within these steel walls.

And this is where we begin. You, each of the players, are on-board the
HMS Thanatus, an experimental nuclear sub stricken on the sea bed. The
HMS Thanatus is a submarine like no other. It's design allows it to dive into
the deepest ocean trenches. She set sail from Europe 3 months ago with an
international crew of naval forces and civilian scientists. Whilst in previously
unexplored depths disaster struck. A strange madness began to grip the
minds of some crew members. They ranted about strange things in a
strange language, fights broke out and people where killed. then explosions
set off, flooding the lower decks, killing most of the crew and leaving the
submarine stricken on the sea bed.

The crew and scientists are joined by a small rescue team who managed to
attach their rescue vehicle to the only working escape hatch, but now find
their craft jammed and unable to leave. It will be up to a month before the
next rescue attempt can be made. In the mean time, all lights will be
switched off for 12 hours each day to conserve electricity.

None of the survivors seam to be effected by the madness, but no one can
be sure. There seams to be no way to tell.

So here you are. It has begun - there is no way to leave the Thanatus until
the nightmare ends; you are trapped. No one knows who to trust, anyone
could be infected with the madness of the deep. Your goal now is simply to
survive.

Getting Started

The object of this game is to survive, and make sure your team survives.
The first step is, obviously, to create your character.

There is a difference between creating a character for this game and most
others: your character's class and abilities are secret. You will notify me
by posting here that you are in the game. I will add your name to the player
list. Once we have enough people (10 - 26) I will give it another day or two
and then close signups. Once this happens, the game will begin. Please
note that you have to sign up BEFORE the game starts - once we're
playing, you cannot join. Also, if you post regularly in the GT forum, your
participation is strongly encouraged.

Once I have everyone's names, I put them in a random class generator of
my own design. Everyone will be assigned a team and class randomly* and I
will PM you with your ID. The teams and classes are listed below:

The Crew

Humans - Your normal, average human. This class receives no special
powers.

Seer - The Seers are a special brand of human. Years at sea have given
the knowlage of the monsters that inhabit the depths. Each lights off
period, they can check ONE person's alignment, to see if they are a human
or something more sinister.

Guardian - The Guardians are armed humans. They're the closest thing our
little band of survivors has to defense. Each lights off period, they choose
one person to protect. If that person is attacked by anyone, the Guardian
will protect them and the attack will be blocked, without the Guardian or
the person he is protecting being killed.

The Spirits of the Abyss

Spirit of the Kraken - The Spirit of the Kraken in a human is a terrifying
beast. Each lights off period, they choose one person to attack. If that
person is not being protected by a Guardian, the kraken will kill them. Bear
in mind that Kraken can kill other Kraken, if they aren't careful.

Spirit of Cthulhu - The Spirit of Cthulhu is a beast of the deap, capable of
overpowering even a human Guardian. These choose one person to attack
each lights off period, just as a Kraken does. However, if that person is a
Guardian, they are killed just as if they were a normal human. Or if that
person is being protected by a Guardian, BOTH players are killed. If, by
chance, the Cthulhu attacks someone defended by TWO Guardians, the
Cthulhu randomly kills one of the three players (The attackee, or one of
the two Guardians).

Playing The Game

Playing this game is simple. The game is divided into two
segments, the LIGHTS ON and the LIGHTS OFF. As the moderator of the
game, I will post in the thread when the each cycle starts. Bear in mind
that your alignmen, and your class are secret. Only you know who you are
and what your abilities are.

Lights On / Lights Off status will be displayed in my forum sig.

During the Lights On Cycle, everyone is in their human form. During this
time, the players may argue and debate as much as they want about who
they believe is a creature of the Abyss. Bluffing, lying, and trickery is
permitted. During this time, they discuss who they think may have been at
the scene of the last killing, who should have seen something, who was
missing and unaccounted for.... Then I will call for a vote on who they wish
to lynch. The person who receives the most votes is lynched by the mob,
and, being dead and all, is out of the game.

During the Lights Off cycle, the spirits of the Abyss players become hideous
monsters bent on killing every human player in the game.
* Each monster will send me a PRIVATE MESSAGE saying who they wish to
attack,
* while Seers tell me who they wish to search to find out if they are a
monster or not,
* and Guardians send me a message saying who they want to protect.

Once all the messages are in, or the time limit is up (typically 12 hours), I
put together the results and post what happened during the lights off period. Any
unprotected human who was attacked will be killed, the Seers will be
private messaged the results of their search (what they do with this
information is entirely up to them.). And then the Lights On cycle begins again,
and the players must decide who they believe is possessed and lynch them.

I will post each time the cycle changes from lights on to off. During the
light period, the players may discuss (or argue, spazz, rant) who they want
to kill. You must all vote before the specified time limit is up (about 12
hours), and the member with the most votes is lynched. I will then begin
the lights off cycle, which works as described above.

The objective of the game is simple: If you're human, kill all horrors on
board the sub so your team survives. If you're possessed by a spirit of the
Abyss, kill all the humans so your team survives.

You may reveal your team alignment or class to anyone. For example,
a Seer can post, "I'm a Seer. Kill this person." However, you have no way
of knowing if it is true and accurate
and revealing your identity might
make you a target for lynching or for the monsters. Convince others to see
your side. Manipulate them for your own ends. Your survival is in your quick
words.

RULES:

If the Lynch vote is a tie past votes against the players will be counted. If
it is still a tie the selection will be random.

Votes can not be changed once they are made.

Failing to vote or tell everyone that you with to abstain from the vote
three times will result in your removal from the game. Stay active.

Do NOT PM or E-mail me unless you are voting or is it critically important.
keep it in the threads.

Do not play other people's parts. Play the part of your character and don't
put words in the mouths of other people's characters.

Strictly no out of character chat in the game thread. There will be a
discussion thread.

Each Lights ON period will last from about 00:00 GMT until 12:00 GMT.
Each Lights OFF period will last from about 12:00 GMT until 00:00 GMT.
The lights status will be displayed in my forum sig.

Guidelines:

All forms of lies and deception are allowed, however cultivating your
character should take priority over winning.

Be gentle with the storyline. Avoid making changes to the story that effect
other players, even if they don't want to be effected.
For example:
"Letum tears a hole in the hull and floods the sub and then sets fire to
everyone's trousers"
is not a good way to play.

Post here if you want to get in this game of
mayhem, trust, distrust, and appearances.

If you apply you MUST have time to vote in the lights ON and OFF
cycles every day. Miss too many votes and you will be removed from
the game.

Good luck.

Ah, so I take it the rules don't differ too much from the Werewolf hunt? Very well. I am in.

Apart from the "rules" section, the main change is:
Quote:
You may reveal your team alignment or class to anyone. For example,
a Seer can post, "I'm a Seer. Kill this person." However, you have no way
of knowing if it is true and accurate
and revealing your identity might

Before this was discouraged.

Though if someone posts they are a creature of the deep and to kill them - probably ought to just because they obviously are suffering from the MADNESS either way.

I suggest you read the last game's thread and decide what the meaning of too painfully is...

Anyway, Letum, just make sure that the submarine is gigantic enough that people can be isolated in different places without anybody to help them in time
