We had an estimated 45M influenza cases in 2017-2018- roughly 13.8% of total US population. Of those cases, an estimated 61K died- or 0.135% of those that were infected. If the Coronavirus hit those same 45M with a 3% mortality rate, that would 1.35M, which would put it as one of the worst pandemics in the US, let alone if it hit other countries in the same fashion. It would be catastrophic. 3% is massive compared to 0.135%.

The reason why this virus is so much more serious than SARS is that SARS only infected others after symptoms showed. This new Coronavirus reportedly can infect others before symptoms show (2-14 day incubation period).

Also, China supposedly has 60+ million citizens in quarantine lockdown now and is quickly building new hospitals within 8 days that can hold 1,000 patients each.

Serious indeed.

As of today, the 'official' numbers are now 630 dead and 31,000 infected. Unofficial numbers could be as high as 6,300 dead and 310,000 infected.

I wonder if Chinese President Xi Jinping has to wear a mask now after his visit to the Wuhan. Maybe he's in quarantine too

Like the cruise ship now in Hong Kong that is quarantined I wonder if it was the same one that the Hong visitor to China took for a cruise and died Feb 1st after returning?

Did you know that that cruise ship was headed for Taiwan and it was denied entry so it went on to Hong Kong and now all cruise ship ports in Hong Hong have been closed.

It's part of the coronavirus family, and the official name is (2019-nCoV), but everyone just calls is Coronavirus.

Besides the shipping problem, factories are being idled all over China right now and production is way down due to the virus. If there's anything you need to buy and it's made in China, I suggest getting in now while it's still available.

That's possibly true, but it still doesn't feel like it. I guess when we see the number of cases in Singapore, Japan, Thailand shoot up 20% daily, it will seem real.

With a 2-14 day incubation period, I have a feeling we'll start seeing many more confirmed overseas cases in the next week or so. They say on average, each infected individual infects 2-3 more people (remember, it can take each newly infected individual up to 14 days before the first symptoms show). Exponential infections is a possibility until a vaccine is developed.

And speaking of Japan (where I live), I remember hearing about the first case two weeks ago where a tour bus driver was infected by a Chinese passenger. He was the first. There are now 45 confirmed cases in Japan, and probably many more unconfirmed cases. The scary thing is that the guy from Hong Kong who infected that cruise ship which in now in quarantine traveled around Tokyo for 3 days before flying back to Hong Kong, after which his first symptoms started showing.

And good luck finding surgical masks (not that they protect the wearer) or antibacterial hand gels in Japan. They are sold out everywhere. I went to several local drugstores and asked when they would get more in and they said they had no idea.

Number of confirmed Coronavirus cases on quarantined cruise ship jumps to 61.

A total of 61 people have been confirmed to have Wuhan coronavirus on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, quarantined off the coast of Japan with 1,045 crew and 2,666 passengers on board.

Some 20 cases had been confirmed on Thursday, and an additional 41 confirmed today. The number of cases on board raise the national total of confirmed cases to 86.
