Default Newbie - How to shoot down planes?

Ship a'hoy!

I have never been able to shoot down a plane, because I find it impossible to aim with the binoculars to have the crew fire at will. Do I have to shoot them manually myself?

Any help will be appreciated.

Happy Easter, folks!

You probably would have to shoot them down manually to be somewhat effective, but the realistic reaction would be to crash dive when a plane was spotted.
