Default Crazy Harbor Raid

So the other day, I was playing in early 1944 raiding harbors with a Type IXB. Pretty ballsy move that late in the war. I had already raided Boston and then I decided to try and raid Halifax. So I sailed up and in there, dodging escorts patrolling outside the harbor. I found some really nice targets in there. A few modern tankers, some liberty cargoes, and a whale factory ship. Good sized ships. Well, while I was in the middle of taking my time targeting them, out of nowhere, a destroyer races right over me and depth charges me. It destroyed my radar antenna, took out my port side propeller, and caused some hull damage and leaks. Fortunately, escorts are idiots in harbors, so he ended up getting stuck in a narrow area where he just kept going back and forth.

I sailed over to an area of the harbor which was sheltered by buildings and allowed me to surface momentarily so my crew could pump water out. I had tried making a run for the open sea at flank speed because the water was weighing down my sub and I had to go at flank speed to keep myself off the bottom. That failed because there just so happened to be a task force with 4 destroyers sitting outside the harbor. As luck had it, the escort carrier in the task force had sailed into the harbor, in a perfect position for me to fire off my last two torpedoes at him. I did and it sank soon after.

Anyway, I surfaced and the buildings sheltered me from most of the gunfire. One shell hit my stern and caused more damage, but it was nothing serious. I submerged again and (after reloading the save a few times!) I managed to slip out of the harbor and dock with a milk cow. When I surfaced from running my batteries out in the ocean, since my port side propeller was gone, I had to sit on the surface and wait for my batteries to recharge while I was dead in the water. As of course the propeller that was taken out was the one that I need to move while I'm recharging batteries.

It ended up being a 74k ton patrol. And it was one of the closest calls I have ever had with GWX 3.0. I only had 10% hull integrity and I had to dive to avoid aircraft well out off the coast of the US.

After that raid, the harbors became far more difficult to penetrate. Unfortunately, the save file was corrupted because I was messing around with some additional mods while I was out on another patrol with the Type IX. Rookie mistake, I know. But still, that was one of the most nail biting experiences I've ever had with this game.

Yup, harbor raids are unrealistic but fun. I like to go in, shoot stuff, then back into a slip and surface, and pull in my external torpedoes while the air raid sirens go off and every gun in the port tries to shell me while I'm blocked by buildings.

Sometimes you can even edge the nose of your boat forward and bring your main gun into action, but usually you start getting hit yourself if you try it.

Escorts just destroy themselves.
