Default Teddy Suhren’s Advice for Handling Convoys

Suhren took U-564 to the Caribbean in mid to late 1942 and penned the following pointers on approaching a convoy. Some isn’t relevant in game, like the trim dive advice, but otherwise this is good advice. Mileage of course may vary based on strength of escorts, however the general principle of spending time matching speed (“Ausdampfen”) and running ahead to 0 AOB is sound.

“The convoy was primarily escorted by air, the naval escort was relatively weak. When sighting the convoy, travel alongside the convoy at the extreme limit of visibility and spend up to 30 minutes mainly matching the enemy’s speed. These 30 minutes have paid off a hundred times over for me. The aircraft flying over the convoy have lights mounted and, naturally, while circling often take a course directly toward the boat. But since they compare our visibility at night with theirs, they always keep sufficient distance. Then, get ahead at the limit of visibility until the convoy shows AOB 0. Conduct the attack from the front using “Lage laufend” (AOB tracking feature of the TDC*). The aircraft will come closer, so the boat must travel at the most minimal speed and hold its breath until the aircraft flies off. The aircraft will always drop a flare first, because initially it never knows whether the white foam it sees is from one of its own escort vessels. Then when the ships are overlapping as much as possible, fire, turn away, and run off. Save the next closest steamer for the the stern tube. If at all possible, conduct a quick trim dive after firing the second load as otherwise the boat may be unable to level at depth and therefore be difficult to handle when faced with enemy countermeasures afterwards.”

*Not possible to pre-set AOB in game as the in-game TDC does not account for own course changes as the model Teddy was using did. Overtaking to 0 AOB is however still a sound practice as it gives you confirmation of target course and provides flexibility in the approach.

Thanks as always ! Big fan of matching course/speed myself.
