Default VIIC/41 Vent problem

In a bit of a fix here. Seeking guidance from the more experienced.

Is there any evidence for this vent, photographic, tech drawings, schematics, etc. on any type VII other than U-995? I cannot find any.

Any drawings I find which include this vent have been based on U-995.

I'd like to eliminate it from my model, but don't want to find out later it was a standard VIIC/41 fixture.

Thanks,

Os

Well, since U-995 is the only surviving VIIc/41 it kinda makes sense that most info will be based on it.

Is the vent in question below the water line per chance? As in, the picture is upside down?

The picture is not upside down. It is of the same vent from your image, just on the port side.

Akk.. ok.
The same vents are on the Revell Kit N#05038 (Type VII C) btw.

Yup. All the Revell kits have it, but it is only on images/drawings of U-995.

David Westwood's Type VII Uboats only has that opening on the drawings for the VIIC/41, but clearly states they are based on U-995.

I am seriously beginning to doubt it was original to the type.

Here is a discussion of Type VII boat modifications. No mention is made of that particular item, but you might find it useful anyway.

Here is the Anatomy Of The Ship book on the Type VII.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/53940354/A...ype-Vii-U-Boat

Drawings of that part show the four main inlet holes. Only the drawings of the VIIC/41 show that fifth hole, and the author says that it is taken from U-995. He also states that this was her appearance for the last two years of the war, but he gives no source for that statement.

That said, if you're building any other sub-variant the drawings do not show that particular vent, so you'd probably be safe removing it.

Did you mean to post a link to a discussion of Occam's Razor? It kind of makes sense, in a way.

I picked up the Anatomy of a ship book a couple weeks ago, and I also questioned his source for his statement that the pics of U-995 were the configuration for the last two years of the war.

Time to start sanding and filling!

Sorry about that. I must have looked at the article and pasted my last link without copying first.

Here's the correct one, also fixed in the first post so people don't get lost.
