Tom CLancy's SSN problems w/xp and compatibility mode...

ahoy.

i know the game is meant for windows 95. long story short,i can get the game to run perfect in compatibility mode...except not with windows audio enabled.

in an attempt to retrofit my rig to run this i have run every diagnostic and adjusted every accelerator imaginable. windows keeps telling me there's nothing wrong with my sound card.

i disable windows audio, the game runs fine in compatability mode, just no sound. enable it and the game crashes on every aspect of the game except the videos. all my drivers are up to date to the best of my knowledge.

here's my hunk of crap's specs as of right now:

Gateway S-5205-S (E2600)
Windows XP Home Edition-SP 3
ATI Xpress 200 (RC410) Motherboard
2456 MB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 Processor-3.00 GHz
Nvidia Geforce 8400 gs 512MB display adapter
Realtek HD Audio Output -->this is the culprit right here. (maybe it's because it's HD,idk...)
direct X 9.0c-version-4.09.0000.0904
Bios-Pheonix-Award BIOS v6.00pg

the error that appears on crash is beyond my ability to comprehend.any suggestions BESIDES running an instance of windows 95 (or playing w/o sound, even i figured that one out) on this unit is GREATLY appreciated in advance, and forevermore...technically this should work...what's wrong??? thanks.

"fish" on!

Try using VDM Sound, a sound card emulator.

The newest version is 2.10, but I recommend 2.0.4.
Both can be found here: http://www.phatcode.net/downloads.php?id=198

To run games with VDMSound, just use the installer, then right click on the game executable and select 'run with VDMSound'.

I hope that solves the problem

awesome. i will do that. i was concerned that this was such an old game that no one would have any good tid-bits of advice. (fingers crossed)

like i said, i've definitely narrowed it down to a problem with my sound config. the game originally required a soundblaster 16 card,so anything that runs old sound configs is certainly a step in the right direction.

this totally fixed my problem. it runs perfect now. Shearwater, you 'da man!

you sir, get a gold star for the day! and everyday for the rest of your life,if i have anything to say about it anyway.

I found a solution with the XP not working. I made the actual installer in the Program folder of the CD run in compatibility mode. It completed the install and game runs flawlessly. Try it and let me know.

Game has been running perfectly under Windows XP Professional, SP3 by running with VDMSound ver 2.04. But as soon as I press "W" upon completion of mission "Defense" it crashes back to Windows erroring that it has "encountered a problem". Has anyone had a similar issue? Is there a way to force the game to an unplayed mission?

EDIT: By opting out of the SSN option "movies play automatically " completion of mission 11 went right to the briefing screen for mission 12, and beyond for further missions, and no more crashes.
