How does the manual dive procedure work

If I play the manual dive procedure and want to dive must I always first put the pointer of the deepth on the desired depth on the down elevator on the right side(SH3 UI style). And if I want to surface the same procedure? If I don´t do that there is no manual diving and surfacing possible. I think there must be a way to dive and to surface just pressing the forward and backward down elevator shown above the officer bar. Any help is welcome.

OK. I found out that I can maual dive when I just first press "V" for diving and "R" for surfacing. And then the manual function with the forward and backward down elevator works. If there is another way please let me know.
