Default Sonar on older boats...

Just a history question for some of you guys?

When exactly did the modern waterfall display come about?

Did the older older Skipjack or Permit classes have them or was there something different?

What did that look like?

Cant find any photos online....go figure.

That's funny, I was researching this topic 1 hour ago.
This link should help.

I've often wondered the same thing myself. I'm also curious about the the paper roll sonar outputs and if they ran 24/7 or only while tracking contacts.

Look at 15:38 above the sonar operator's head. Is that one of the paper units?

I think you have to credit the editor of the video for that. It sounded more like a piston engine than a nuclear sub.

I'm thinking that was just wind noise, camera seems to either be on a helicopter or high on a mast somewhere overlooking the sub.

So from the video we got some sort of. Mechanical direction indicator with a possible paper roll above it for tracing bearing over time.

Souns about right?

I wonder if. Wild torpedo avaoidance manuvers and such were possible using such devices? How would you know when to jink? Headphones indicating possible range?

Very interesting stuff. Very hard to find pictures of.
