The most efficient way of usung the deckgun to effect a sinking (conditions allowing of course) is to aim just below the waterline and puncture each compartment....the flooding will do the rest but the time taken will be dependant on number of holes and size of ship.

Shooting at the cargo whilst causing a reduction in the damage points system and causing fires which will further debilitate the vessels chances of survival will take a great deal longer.

Was firing on a bit under the waterline but it won't sink also it had alread 4 holes in the bottom from the Torpedos which detonated right under it and on with direct impact.

Gnah, i think someone sabotaged my Torpedos Again a unsinkable Sam, two hits of Falke Torpedos. It doesn't even had screws anymore and a big hole but still floating along. I watied for hours until i saw smoke on the horizont. Destroyers in-bound!! Also i wonder the other U-Boat aces doesn't get more tonnage, maybe they were sunk?

Have you thought of trying for a pilots licence?

Sunk or promoted and sent to safe desk jobs.

The Germans suffered a huge propaganda loss in losing their U-boat newsreel stars Kretschmer, Prien and Schepke in just a few days in 1941 and wanted to make sure their U-boat commander heroes would not meet a hero's death and the consequent nasty question for the Propaganda department: "how do we inform the nation that our U-boat hero has been sunk with all hands on board?" Therefore after 1941 commanders were promoted and sent to much safer leading and training assignments, if they got famous.

(A good reason for a war weary submarine commander to be aggressive too: "If I manage to sunk one fat tanker more, I might get a promotion and a ticket to safety".)

You must have hurt Dönitz's feeling pretty bad at one point or another

On a more serious note SH3Commander simulates this thing. It follows your career, sunk ships, patrol days, patrol numbers - and then ends your career and sends you to a nice desk job and a comfy chair.

Once this happens, your biggest water challenge will be trying to sink your rubber duck in the bathtub...
