Those mines are present ingame (OM) from long time!
They are launched only with VIID, and only from rear tubes (simulating the mines boxes behind the conning)
...and they are active
In fact Lurker treated them as static torpedoes for the game to recognize them. That was awesome idea!
You even can set their depth!
I’m sure if you lay them (best staggered) in a hot spot with traffic, you could sink some ships.

Now i would like to know if SMA mines had that looking...always thought mines had the little pikes around

Not sure, although I do know certain models of WWII German mine were hornless.... I believe they just sensed a magnetic field and thus didn't need the traditional chemical horn to detonate. Again, excellent shots and I hope to see more; I've been busy modding SH4 with no time to patrol!

Crossed the HMS Glorious way, but couldn't get in good firing position...
Furthermore flat sea = death against a bunch of DDs with no high depth around

Here is a screenshot from my game - My boat, U-40, can be seen here sneaking through the english channel while enroute to its patrol zone in grid square CG 46. current date is september 5, 1939.
