Default Friendly Fire?

Just curious if anyone has experienced friendly fire in the TMO Update yet? If so, please describe where, when etc. These encounters are rare of course, esp after early phase of war, representing the panic of pearl harbor etc having resided somewhat and better trained forces. Of course, the possibility is always there.

With the new construction and restoration of ETO campaign in TMO, will see some time operating off East coast, Carribean, Panama Canal en route to Pacific and of course threat of friendly fire will be possibility there.

(OK I realize this thread is almost a year old but no one commented so I will! )

Does this mean that friendly fire does not occur in the vanilla version of SH4? And only TMO has this feature ?

Does anyone know if it is possible to remove color ID (red, blue) from contact icons on the navigation/attack maps ? This would put the onus on me to identify contacts as friend or foe.

Btw it seems that friendly fire occurred more than 'once in a blue moon' - here is a link I googled to a list of friendly fire incidents involving USN subs during WWII (hope it works):

yes.
refer back to Stock folder(s) C:\Ubisoft\Stock-Save\Data\Menu\Gui.
create a new MODS folder for yourself in your JSGME installation. Call it whatever seems logical to you.
Create a subfolder hierarchy to match the folders above (\Data\Menu\Gui).
copy Contline.dds and Dashline.dds from the Stock folder to the new folder.
enable the new MODS folder with JSGME and you should be good to go.

Yes, the first version was released in September. V2.0 is in final stages of testing, will be released sometime in April if all goes well.

Thanks! If I understood you correctly then I should copy the 2 dds files from my vanilla version of SH4 over to the new mod folder and then activate the mod with JSGME.

I did this and there were some blue sonar lines as well as the usual grey when my sub finally did detect several ships (all the ships were Japanese). And now all ships have tails, too.
But am not sure if it avoids automatic detection of friend/foe (through blue/red coloring).

I Need to get some more playing time in and meet more contacts to find out more. Note: I have only played the FOTSRU version of SH4, don't know what stock or TMO versions are like.

well, let's say that with this fix that YOU will know who is friend/foe, which is what i thought you were asking. when you encounter a contact that is green, avoid sinking it.

as far as you becoming a friendly fire casualty is concerned, i have never been fired upon by a friendly vessel in thousands of missions, that includes both flavors of TMO and FOTRSU as well as some other mega-mods.

"Friendly Fire" *(unprovoked) is only a feature in TMO Update released in September. I added this by creating another "country" for the roster, the "United States" , making a "Axis" unit and adding various Allied planes and ships to it. These aircraft and ships are place in certain areas to randomly spawn and if encounter player, will attack. So basically, if player sees a US or Allied type DD or a aircraft such as PBY, does not necessarily mean it is friendly. Really adds a "edge" to the sim. Neutral and friendly units in some circumstances will fire back on player if fire first.

Far as frequency, definitely can happen more than "once in a blue moon", just depends on where player is at, date, time etc. Example, in early war off Midway, Hawaii, West Coast and East Coast of US, player is more likely to face friendly fire incidents. This represents the period when IJN subs were operating close to these areas, and German u boats were off East Coast and in the Caribbean Sea . However, can occur at any point during war. Example being, the one time I have been killed by "friendly fire", was in November 1944 off Morotai by a Destroyer Escort. US sonar and ASW weapons are tough by this point, especially hedgehog.

Far as changing the colors and icons, in TMO by default all icons and sensors lines are black so cant ID targets that way (always despised the colored lines and silhouettes making target ID so easy) and I believe FOTRS has a add in mod to change it. For stock, not sure.

this feature will make any Joint Operation rather riotous, such as the lifeguard missions during the Solomons Campaign, etc.

Yep lol. Definitely makes the player stay on edge when comes to contacts, slip up, will get you killed, esp later war. Although I took great care to make sure the actual allied units and these "pretend" allied units do not interact, so don't have them slugging it out and killed immersion lol. Well, other than say a "friendly fire" patrol plane attacking a actual US sub off the US coast etc as , have witnessed such attacks. Just after exiting Panama Canal while testing out East Coast New Construction mod, watch PBY dropped depth charges on a S boat off Panama, boat smoke then quickly went under, then turned towards me , submerged and heard two explosions. Also allows for "depth charge indoctrination" in new construction careers and training.

I lost my 14 patrol career in Nautilus, one patrol away from career end and sailing back to US in early 45 (added the trip as a "patrol", with perils along the way of course) to friendly fire, because I let me guard down. November 1944, was off Morotai heading to Mios Woendi to end patrol after completing successful mission, including using guns to finish off the stranded DARTER(added this to the campaign, as Nautilus did this in real life). RWR detected radar emissions but I was in a supposed safe zone given Morotai was in US hands. Well, the DE (Butler Class if i recall) closed and did not register he was a "Friendly Fire" until fire on me. Missed with gunfire but given advanced US sonar and sound gear. Located me, got me with hedgehogs and depth charges.
