Default Newbie Active Sonar Question

Hello everyone. I'm not sure if I've ever posted in here but I have a question regarding the active sonar upgrade.

I'm not really sure what it does. I'm playing at super easy mode (26% realism). Isn't it used to find underwater objects? Is it to determine range on a surfaced ship? If it is for underwater objects, is it just for mines? Are there even enemy subs in the game?

Basically, what is the active sonar used for. Thanks!

Edit: Unrelated question. I'm not sure if something is going on but I rarely get above 400-500 renown for each patrol. If I sink like, 40,000 tons then I might get 600. This is impossible for me to get the XXI at this rate. Is this supposed to happen or am I just really bad?

When you get active sonar, you go into the hydrophone suite, aim the arrow at an identified target. I

Identified meaning when you place the hydrophone needle over the contact the words merchant, unknown, or warship appear in the notepad.

Then just hit the sonar ping button and you get instant accurate range.

Just be careful if you use it around escorts. You butt is toast!

Ok cool. Thank you. So basically it's only used for range finding, and since I'm not using manual targeting yet, I guess I don't need it for now.

edit: Woah, I just realized I've been a member here for 15 years. I wonder what game I was playing to sign up here. Maybe 688(i) or Sub Command or something lol.

After some reading in the Community Manual, it looks like Renown is tied to realism settings. I'm going to have to edit the renown so I can get my boat later.

It sounds like you've been sinking some Neutral ships. If you do that, you lose Renown equal to what the ship is worth.

No I'm 100% sure they are the enemy. I'm guessing I suck.

Rangefinding is correct, unlike modern subs the "mouse roar" active sonar in most LA class subs emits a sound in every direction to give a sonarman info on everything around him in all directions. It also required a lot energy to produce which is more Than possible with nuclear technology.

The sonar the Germans used was very new to them on uboats, and they were working out the bugs.

Thanks everyone! You guys are awesome. I don't play with high realism settings because I have a hard enough time hitting a ship with the auto targeting.

In my main campaign I'm only in 1943 and these destroyers are freaking me out. Although it is super fun trying to evade them.

Who knows? Maybe some day I'll up the realism but I'm having fun now anyway.

As a fellow noob, I found these two fantastically helpful, firstly to help get into a good position to hit and then to move to more realistic targeting - which will help your score! I am playing at 85% so they must be good since I don't claim to be the brightest...

This is the gold standard explanation from wazoo giving you the 90 degree shot:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=206381

The second is a youtube clip that I found to be outstandingly clear in general, demonstrating angle on bow and giving a visual explanation that correlates to the first article.

My other tip would be to check your torpedo shot by hitting F6 and zooming in which will give confidence you've got it right.

Hope they help and welcome back aboard!
