Sixth War Patrol of USS S-40.

Operating out of Freemantle in June of '42, tasked with patroling Java Sea. Course was laid and S-40 set out to enter the Java area through the Lombok Strait.

After a few days cruise passed Lombok. Upon exiting the Strait, new surface radar set picked up a small group to the north west, heading E, NE. Closed at flank, spotted Destroyer line and what appeared to be a battle ship and a cruiser in mid-late afternoon.

Reported contacts, dove to PD...On approach, reply recieved from COMSUBPAC to engage.

Approaching on silent runnign, 1/3, began target speed solution for task force BB (ID'ed as Fuso) at ~4k yards, approaching for perpendicular intercept. Solved to be ~12/13 knts, set TDC accordingly and began to change torp settings. Set tubes 1 and 3 for and aft spread respectively, ~20 ft depth. Set tubes 2 and 4 down the middle of the track, 10 and 20 ft depth respectively.

At ~2500 yards, close to perpendicular, fired salvo and waited.....Confirmed what appeared to be three hits. Assumed missed torp was aft spread, fires seen in middle and foward sections of BB.

Dove to 250 ft and endured some depth charging nearby from destroyer screen. ~3 Destroyers pursued me until dusk. Destroyer captains are still noted to be setting charges shallow. Minor rattling of the crew.

Surfaced after sunset, and began pursuit on surface and flank on TF track. Mid evening, surf radar picked up lone contact, followed soon by two more farther up the track.

Surface watch spotted Fuso BB, heavy list at low speed. Set up for surface approach, only one tube set. Prior to finalizing surface shot solution, BB spotted S-40. A small calibre shell exploded near aft portion heavily damaging rear decking and causing moderate leaks in , machine gun fire also perforated conning tower and damaged scopes. Tube 1 fired... S-40 dove to periscope depth with full damage control teams alerted..

Tube 1 hit Fuso in stern. Flooding caused eventual capsizing of BB.

After sinking confirmed by sonar operator, and after enduring moderate rear compartment flooding, S-40 surfaced and set course for Freemantle for repairs...

The Paragon, an S class submarine of the Asiatic fleet was struggling in a night of rough weather. The crew were impatient for the skipper to give the order to dive so the constant rocking of the boat would stop. Visibility was low although the reported convoy should be somewhere nearby. The watch officer spots a silloutte off to port and notifies the Captain. Through the binoculars the contact is soon marked. Two destroyers leading a freighter and a large modern liner. Two good targets but the subs limited torpedo load means that only one can receive a focussed attack. The captain immediately chooses the liner without hesitation. He doesn't want those troops reaching their destination. If he rids them into the sea, they won't be able to shoot his country-men on land.

A course is plotted to intercept the boats and the Paragon slips beneath the waves. As luck would have it the targets are on a course headed directly in front of the rusted boat. "Rig for silent running," "Ahead 1/3!" are the last words spoken for several minutes as the Jap ships head for the attack corridor. The freighter reaches the firing position and a single torpedo is loosed. "AHEAD 2/3 and HARD TO PORT" the orders are made and the fleet boat moves to intercept the liner. "RUDDER AMID SHIPS!!" "FIRE TUBES 2, 3 and FOUR!" More torpedoes scream into the water, lines of steam mark the course of their journey. "Ahead 1/3, Lower periscope, Hard to Starboard! Dive Dive DIVE!!" and the crew listen for the result of the attack.

"Torpedo hit sir!" as the noise of the torp dies down the captain smiles at his crew and nods. "We broke her back with one fish boys!" but celebrations are held down as the loud ping of enemy ASW sends a chill up the spines of the submariners. "Enemy sound contact, warship, closing" is whispered by the sonar man. Immediately after the sound of the three torpedoes greeting the liner brings a triumphant explosion. The troop ship can be heard breaking apart before the last fish rams her.

"Make your Depth 59 metres! Rudder Amidships! Let's slip away before they find us" but the captain words are followed by the loud sound of screws coming closer and closer until they seem directly above. "AHEAD FLANK! HARD TO PORT!" the boat surges to life, in less then 30 seconds the shaking starts. Depth charges rock the small boat, the crew hold on and the cook curses. "Ahead 1/3" whispers the captain as the noise dies down. "Rudder 30% starboard" and another set of screws can be heard closing. Depth charges explode close by but the enemy have lost the position of the fleeing sub. The minutes go by while the constant threat of death can be heard exploding all the while, eventually the sound fades into the distance. The Paragon lives again.

Someday, ill get back to writing patrol logs. When i do write them i go by a specifc format. I thought i'd outline the format i use because i think it makes them more intresting - not to mentioni easier to write.

I keep a notepad by my desk. And write very short, terse comments in it, and flesh it in later. But the general format is as such:

Commander name
Sub name/number
Patrol number
Operational order

Misc predeparture commentary

departure date

Calender day
Time of day - occurance
Time of day - occurance
Time of day - occurance
(repeating day and time of day format as neccessary)

Annotate when entering ordered area
Annotate when orders were completed.

Annotated new orders
Annotate when departing from assigned area and for what reason.

Annotate when RTB
Annotate when arrived at base.

Closing remarks on the war patrol to include
- Tonnage sunk
- torpedo and fuel expendature
- number of days at sea

Damn i miss Sh3 commander. lol
