You're not alone, IIRC a similar fate befell a 109 or 110 pilot during the BOB, strafed a train on the Kent Coast, the boiler exploded and the debris damaged the aircraft so much it had to crash land nearby.

Trim often... no, more than often, constantly. Really, it flies itself. You can mantain a constant course, speed and altitude towards a target without any input, while staring down at the Skvahl display and locking targets. Engaging other helo's is a different story though.
