In fact, while escorting convoy, the escort ships are always pinging with ASDIC, and you only begin to hear the "ping" when they start to detect you. This is not due to your engine noise... I think, in SH3, if you hear a ping, that means that the escort is detecting you.

This is a pretty basic binary AI...
