Connecting to internet - problems!!

I have been trying for a few weeks to get my wife's computer connected to the net with no success!!
I have a 3G21WB router/modem, it has a wifi connection to BigPond ISP, not that that really matters, this router also has 4 LAN sockets one of which goes to my computer (LAN 1), this was the initial setup connection to the internet and worked well.
I have since connected my wife's computer via LAN (LAN 2), run "Network Setup Wizard" to connect via "This computer connects to the internet on my network through a residential gateway or through another computer", at the conclusion of this both computers connect OK, can transfer files, share printer etc but it will not connect to the internet.
Now if I run "Network Setup Wizard" and connect "This computer connects directly to the internet. The other computers connect to the internet through this computer", at the conclusion I just get an error message!

Funny thing is my computer is connected via "This computer connects to the internet on my network through a residential gateway or through another computer".
I'm starting to think that the Internet connection has nothing to do with LAN connections!
Most frustration since others (on another forum) have had no problems doing this but none can/will offer any help!
I don't see any point in running the BigPond setup disk since it is already connected to the internet, this would sets up accounts etc!
Any Help appreciated!

Are you using Windows 7 or XP, shouldn't really matter as both will setup automatically but with Windows 7 there is an option Home or Public when you first setup your network/internet and choose the right one for you which would most likely be home.

My network is setup - network hub pc connected to lan1 and 2nd pc connected to lan2 both share files and can access the internet.

Last resort you could try some app like ZoneAlarm or any firewall protection app, install and let it setup your network & internet sometimes this method solves internet access. Sounds like windows is blocking the 2nd pc from the internet only allowing network access.

Both machines have XP, I don't use windows firewall, I have COMODO, I did try the wife's PC without a firewall even but no go! Back at my old residence I used to have an ADSL modem to the main PC then LAN cable to Ethernet HUB and wife's PC to the HUB, worked a treat! Unfortunately only wireless out here in the bush!

Zone alarm only lets you use one computer as a 'gateway to the internet' to allow another pc to connect to the net if you are using zone alarm pro.

messing about with 'pc gateways' and the like is a pain in the backside - either you get file transfer between pc's and no internet, or you get internet and no file transfer - that's my experience anyway.

Connecting via an ethernet hub/router is more or less 'plug & play'.

Have you manually assigned ip and dhcp addresses for these computers?
I know my router default IP was interfering with my pc's default ip - so I had to change one, and set an IP range on the router so if any other computers were connected to the network they would not have problems.
Most of the time you can set it to automatically assign from a range of IP/dhcp or whatever and it just gets on with it.

http://portforward.com/default.htm handy site for this stuff.

If I were you I'd start from scratch with your connection install.

I have tried with manual TCP/IP and auto, either way the LAN works but not the internet, I have uninstalled the Marvell network, rebooted and it auto reconnects to the LAN again, I do wonder if I should try running the Bigpond setup on this computer as well as mine!

That shouldn't matter.

Did you try a different port on the router (though it is probably not a bad port)? It may also be a configuration issue with the router itself (like for example, things are going out successfully, but being routed back to the first computer not the second). Also are you using a DMZ? I would also try putting the second computer in LAN 1 to see if it works that way. That will help you figure out where the problem is.

You also may want to try doing a hardware reset on the router, this sometimes fixes issues like that (but it will put the router back to the factory settings). The usual procedure is to hold down the reset button (usually recessed in the back of the router) for 30 seconds, unplug the router while still holding down the button, count another 30, release and plug back in.

Open command prompt (Start>Run>(type) cmd (press Enter)) and then type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. Do it on both and paste the results here. Got to be something simple!

Shouldn't need to use a computer as a gateway now, and the router should hand you an IP so using the network settings in auto will be fine.

Reset all networking to automatically acquire, it wouldn't hurt the flush the DNS (IPconfig /flushdns) then do a renew (Ipconfig /renew). Then I would check the web browser to make sure the connection setting is not pointing to a proxy.

This may take some time, I am not a network guru so some of this went straight over the top, not sure what is a DMZ is, both computers have comodo, I don't use windows firewall, had done a hard reset to the router but no change, trying a different port on the router is over my head, sounds like I could lose internet connection an both!

Don't know what to look for here, I can access the router settings by going to http://10.0.0.138/ however this is only accessible from my computer.
My son brought his computer up from the big smoke awhile back and we plugged his in and it went straight off, comodo just came up with a box to ask if I wanted to accept this new zone, I clicked yes, and it connected, internet went straight away, so I must assume that the problem lies with either comodo on my pc or settings on my wife's, however I have been told that if my pc was off the computer should still connect to the router /internet independent of mine!

Will give it a try (not sure where to look, though she has IE as well as FF, will try that.

Will do this first!!

Edit:
I tried running IPConfig on my computer in a command window but got "Access is Denied", this is what I get when trying to run chkdsk, my wifes computer works fine, if anyone can help me on this I would really appreciate it!

I just ran IE, and it works, wish I had tried this earlier!! so it is probably what Longam suggests, I will see what I can find in FF or maybe upgrade it to a later version.

Success, you were correct Longam, FF internet connection was through a "Manual proxy configuration" for my old ISP!! How embarrassing!!

Thanks all, if someone could assist with the "Access is Denied" problem at the command prompt would be great!

Reece - do you get an access denied on ANY command you run from the command line?

If so, then its a systems32 permission issue more than likely. Let us know.

Yes, I think so, if I go to Start/Run/chkdsk then it runs, it is only if I run command to get a window! Herr-Berbunch suggested the following:
go to Tools/Folder Options/View and at the bottom untick Use Simple File Sharing, then go to Windows folder right click on System32 folder select Security and tick "Replace Permission Entries On All Child Objects With Entries Shown Here That Apply To Child Objects." then apply, after restoration I tried again but the problem is still there, maybe I should reboot!

you can reboot - shouldn't change anything.

go to a command prompt and try typing in the following:

ping www.google.com

tracert www.google.com

if both of those fail with the same access denied, let me know.
