Default Asian Winter Games 2029

Die Welt reports:
----------------------------

Skiing in the desert state: Saudi Arabia is to host the Asian Winter Games in 2029. The deserts and mountains would become "the playground of winter sports", the Asian Olympic Committee reported. The umbrella organisation announced that the city of Neom was unanimously chosen at the 41st General Assembly in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

"This is a great victory for the Saudi nation and the whole Gulf region," said Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Al Faisal of a decision that is remarkable in at least two respects: firstly, the city of Neom has yet to be completed, and secondly, it is located on a patch of earth where there is definitely no snow.

The Gulf state, much criticised for human rights violations, is trying to improve its reputation with lucrative sporting events. With a lot of money, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman brings top-class sporting events to the country: among them Formula 1, boxing, horse racing and, currently, especially golf. With almost unlimited means, a series competing with the American PGA Tour has just been launched, and the golf pros are being lured away with sums in the hundreds of millions.

The decision of the Asian Olympic Committee is another step towards establishing the Kingdom as one of the leading countries in sport, Sports Minister Al Faisal has now written. In 2017, Saudi Arabia had announced the construction of the mega city of Neom on the Red Sea, which, with an area of 26,500 square kilometres, is to be larger than Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The city is being built in the northwest of the country on the borders with Egypt and Israel and is intended to compete with Dubai and Qatar in terms of tourism.

Air taxis will then also be on the road in Neom. It is planned that the mountain region of Trojena, which is part of the mega-city, will be converted into a winter sports area. The Winter Games are to be held there in seven years. The region lies at an altitude of 1500 to 2600 metres, and it can get cold there. The climate, however, is dry as dust and there will only be artificial snow.

The Asian Winter Games were last held in 2017, and since then no suitable host country has presented itself. And so Trojena was the only candidate for 2029.

Should be quite a spectacle, they certainly have the money to make it so.
