When my C-64 ruled my desktop (before my 8088, CGA days), I was playing either Silent Service or Eypx Sub Battle Simulator.

I had that for my old Commadore 64 ! It wasn't my favorite game though. That distinction goes "The Adventure Construction Set". Even today, there's nothing as cool as that game was.
