Default Halifax and St. Johns

So its july 1940 and i paid a visit to Canada. I first went to St. Johns, and it was stormy out so i couldnt see much. Well the whole trip over there was a stormy ride. At St. Johns there wasnt a whole bunch of targets. I was dissappointed, i thought some larger targets would be there.

So i headed down to Halifax, cause my dad said it was a naval base during the war. And since the shipping lanes for the East Coast and the ST. Lawrence Sea Way channel through that area i thought it would be good hunting. But i was wrong. So i ended up in Halifax and again was very dissapointed.

Halifax was the biggest naval port in Canada, and still is. I spent many years posted there and on various ships in the 80s and 90s. With Canada's military being amalgamated it is no longer known as HMCS Stadacona but rather Canadian Forces Base Halifax (CFB). I spent far too much time at the Fleet Club there

Bedford Basin is a natural harbour that was where the convoys formed up for deployment across the Atlantic.

The top of this photo shows the exit from the bay to the Atlantic. Very narrow and easy to defend against U-Boats.

Halifax is on the right of the narrows and Dartmouth is on the left. The Naval dockyard is halfway though the narrows on the Halifax side.

The spot where the basin meets the narrows was also the site of the worlds largest man-made explosion in 1917. The Halifax Explosion

I have gone by on my way to PEI, actually took the boat close to where I live, and had multiple contacts, some warships, convoys, etc.

If you have ever used Spysat, you will see that there is lots of activity in and around those locations.

Both Halifax and St. Johns are really nice places to visit (in real life though). I went there onboard M/S Norwegian Dream some years ago and loved it. Halifax has one great maritime museum and the smoothest local brew on the coast . On the other hand there's something magical about St. Johns and New Foundland. I'm definitely going back there someday.

You don't say what version of the game your playing If it's the stock version then no there will be no traffic....but if it's GWX then there should be a considerable amount (least there was last time I visited) :hmm:

Argh! Damn you!

Fortunately, none of my family lived in Halifax during the war years; my Dad was still in England and my mom was still in PEI So shell away!

1. Does shelling buildings destroy them? Any rewards?

2. What is spysat?

Been tempted to try that spysat mod after a few hours cruising in circles but past experience with cheat codes tells me the game isn't gonna have the same attraction afterwards

Yep, because whats the fun is it to shoot BBs as much as u like by intercepting taskforces

I never succesfully attacked a Taskforce, I did meet some

the closed I got to a BB was sooo close that It rammed me while I was submerged......I heard loud noises but the wheather was too bad too see...so I got rammed by a Revenge class...OUCH! and thats what SH3 is about those SURPRISE SURPRISE!! moments

I am actually working in HMCS Stadacona (still known as such) but you are right it has an address of Canadian Forces Base Halifax (CFB).
Halifax was a big base during the war, and as far as I can remember a collection point for ships prior to proceeding to the UK. There are still old boys here who talk of "walking across ships to get across the Bedford basin". There is also HMCS Sackville, the last corvette afloat. If you visit you should go on this ship, its really interesting.
