"Plane" has different meanings, so I suggest that this is not a flying machine at all, but a tool for shaping wood.

They won't fly (unless you throw them), the modern form of a hand plane (the Stanley plane) was invented around that time, it was made mainly of steel and it was invented by an American (his name wasn't Stanley, though).

It's an Elliot Starke bench plane, the great innovation being the corrugated bottom intended to reduce friction during use. I thought I'd better get this done sooner rather than later so as not to tick people off - but I reckon I could've gone on with this for days
