Default Invade Motherland: what tactics to use?

Invade Motherland was rated a 3-star, but its counterpart, Protect Motherland, was ALSO rated a 3-star. Yet I must say, Protect in this case is MUCH easier than invade!

First, let me describe what I tried. I was ahead of the CVBG heading 000 at 5 knots. The CVBG is doing 15+ heading northeast, straight into 4 Soviet subs. I tried sprint and drift to keep ahead of the CVBG. I was able to take out a Victor, but the CVBG started getting hit. I sent two torpedoes down every bearing that shows torpedo in the water, one shallow and another deep, all have ceiling of 100 ft to prevent any chance of fratricide. I must have shot off at least 8 ADCAPs. I got ONE hit... So that's two down.

Then either Nitmitz was crippled by this time, or an Akula got me with a Shkval when I barely have time to hit the decoy button.

Was I supposed to have just dashed ahead of the CVBG, attracting the attention of the hostile subs, and evade to the best of my ability while firing back? Or is there something ELSE to it? I can't wait for them since the CVBG is moving much faster than I am. By the time I got a solution CVBG would be steaming over me.

Any suggestions?

As an aside, the counter-mission, Protect Motherland, was MUCH easier that it should be rated a 2-star. I stayed in front of the CVBG, and sent 6 cruise missiles down the first sonar bearing I got. However, the Aegis shield is strong, no damage. I followed up with torpedoes, but had to evade the Vikings sent by the carrier. In the meanwhile, the other subs have not been sitting idle. An Oscar was able to get off the entire load of CM's and took out Nimitz's goalkeeper Ticonderoga. The escorting 688 was tied up with a Victor approaching from behind the CVBG. That left me almost free to attack the front ships at will, except for that darn S-2 Viking overhead. So I starting pumping out Type-65 torpedoes at the closest ship two at a time, and two more at the Nimitz. Got hits on everybody, and Nimitz is crippled, but I want more kills, so sent more torpedoes downrange, and took out the remaining Ticonderoga and the Arlieigh Burke, and decided to end the scenario.
