How unexpectedly! Contrary to announcements, no gas will continue to flow through the Nord Stream 1 Baltic Sea pipeline from this Saturday. This was announced by the state-owned company Gazprom on Telegram on Friday. The reason is an oil leak at the Portovaya compressor station, Russia claims. The flow of gas will remain stopped until the problem is resolved.

I predict that oil leak has come to stay. And if it goes away, somethign else will happwen - bet!

Poor German hopefuls, how could life be so unfair ...

And this: Now the merry-go-round starts. Arcelor-Mittal, the world's largest steel producer, is shutting down two production facilities at the end of September due to high energy prices in Germany. "Until further notice," one of the two blast furnaces at the flat steel site in Bremen will be shut down. And the direct reduction plant at the Hamburg long steel mill is also to be shut down. In addition to the already high costs for gas and electricity, the gas surcharge planned from October will place a further burden on the competitiveness of energy-intensive plants, it says in justification. "With a tenfold increase in gas and electricity prices, which we had to accept within a few months, we are no longer competitive in a market that is 25 percent supplied by imports," Germany boss Reiner Blaschek is quoted as saying in a statement from Arcelor-Mittal.

Several producers in the alumium industry in germany have stopped production already many weeks ago.

A rat tail of shortages in products made of these is to follow. And price hikes for end products fueling inflation further.

I post this here and not in the energy or economy thread, because we are talking about the symptoms of economic warfare that also is part of the Ukraine war.

Moscow meanhwile has reacted to the threat by the G7 and indicates that it will react by not delivering anything at all to anyone who obeys such price caps for oil and gas. How unpredictable! And you guess what - they can even afford it!

Once again I get the idea that the West does not shoot its foot, but head.

It takes a crashing military defeat for Russia to make them stop believing that no matter what in the end they will nevertheless inevitably win anyway due to their mystical rooting in the powers on nature herself and special Russian archpowers etc etc. As long as they are driven by this confidence in their invincibility they will press on with their war against Ukraine. Not politics and economics and finances, but only battles will stop them.

And we still put the foot on the Ukrainian brake... With all energy deliveries now likely to stop anyway, we even should consider to threaten - and be willing to do it! - with direct military intervention. I mean, look at their performance. The idea that Russia still is capable to roll into Poland and take it, is currently ridiculous.

There is not much to destroy in the first place, Russian economy has never recovered much after the financial crisis (2014–2016) you just can't destroy something twice.

In two years, the number of open vacancies has more than doubled. The number of unemployed continued to increase to 353 thousand in July 2022. That is 3.6 percent of the labor force. The turnover of temporary employment agencies and employment services increased by 5.8 percent in the first quarter 2021 compared to a quarter earlier.

Bet that Russia can not present figures like this.

Default White House to Seek $11.7 Billion in Additional Ukraine Aid

The White House will ask Congress to provide additional aid for Ukraine in the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, as officials warn that earlier monies are running out with the effort to combat Russia’s invasion now past its six-month mark.

The administration is seeking $11.7 billion in security and economic assistance for Ukraine in the first quarter of fiscal 2023, along with $2 billion aimed at helping to prevent domestic energy costs from going up as Russian President Vladimir Putin squeezes supplies.

Yeah, U.S. taxpayers wouldn't want energy costs to go up in the Ukraine.

The cost that Ukraine pays in this war from the destruction of buildings and infrastructure amounted to $113.5 billion and eventually a total of $750 billion for recovery. Think they pay more than any U.S. taxpayer, and this is only economical.
