Default Academy Women to Become First Female US Submariners

Looks like it's just a matter of time now.

Quote:
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Female sailors will begin serving on submarines by the end of 2011, with Naval Academy graduates leading the way, Navy leaders told a Senate committee Feb. 25.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the Navy is in a good position to move forward with integrating women onto submarines.

Personally, I believe it should be the junior enlisted who arrive first on the subs first and then work their way up the ranks, eventually making officer and chief. But there are a lot of other issues associated with that.

There are so many issues its hard to even begin to discuss them all. Just discussing them is difficult. Also don't forget if we go to battle and the men on board are not sure they're going to be alive at the end of the week everything changes.

Are we assuming that the women on board won't be facing the same thoughts of potential death in combat, or just that they'll handle it so much better that it won't be an issue?

Was watching 'Starship Troopers' last night and noticed a scene where men and women were taking communal showers together and no one even batted a eye.

I wonder if we'll ever get to that level of 'comfortable'....

Why not? Ever heard of a nude beach? People don't go around gawking at other people's junk there.

Thought I'd share this on the topic, I believe General Schwarzkopfs' quote pretty much sums it up though.

I think it's because the only people who enjoy nude beaches are the ones no one wants to gawk at.

I've heard the book is better. The movie is cheesy and over the top, but feeding the baby at 3am I needed some mindless action and it was the only thing on.

Not if its a nude beach in Spain, its against the law to be ugly in Spain or something...

Its like the diffrence between U-571 and Das Boot.

Although it does have an interesting take on a co-ed warship, no fraternization if you put two MI troopers on guard duty at the entrince to the female quarters. Also the majority of the officers were female (naval officers that is since Starship Troopers takes place on troops ships, the infantry officers were mostly big dumb males).
