SHO U-158 War Diary

U-158 War Diary - EDIT: Now with 100% extra free Working Links!

Here's one for you - a full war diary for a 2-month patrol to the US coast in 1942! This is the culmination of a little research project I've been doing on U-Boat war diaries, and I decided to have a go at producing an entire, 'in-character' KTB of my own.

The two main references for anyone interested in this are the KTB section of U-Boat Archive (this has full explanatory notes, as well as a few full examples of its own), and U-Boat Attack Logs. This has 480 pages of attack log goodness, with full records for every allied warship sunk in the Atlantic and Mediterranian theatres during the war and a huge selection of background information.

I've made a few adjustments to the 'story' of my KTB - extra details like crew injuries, admin, speaking to survivors etc. But all the main events are as they actually happened on my game. I've tried to make it as realistic as possible so it might be a bit hard to understand - you can either check the website above, or post a message here and I'll get back to you ASAP.

The first half of the patrol, from 5 Jun to 28 Jun is most interesting, there are a few convoy intercepts there. Then I patrol CA29 for a bit, and after refuelling at the 'milk cow' U-461, head to the Carribean and then home - but with no more success. 30,000GRT though, not too shabby. Realism and mods are all listed in the signature below, so enjoy!

Interesting to read.

There a some errors regarding the position entries. For example...
"Jun 14th 1942 1711hrs: position BE9233"
19hours later...
"Jun 15th 1942 1200hrs: position BD9411"

It's a distance of 696nm in 19 hours!

Thanks for taking the time to read - especially in such detail! You're dead right, I've traced the error.

The 14th's 1200 weather report should read BD93, not BE. The error's carried forward to the 1711 contact report which should be BD92 - but I get it right on the 15th, hence the time-warp jump. My obermaschinist is good - but he ain't that good. My Oberstuermann has been sent to the Russian front in recognition of this egregious error.

(There is a bit of a jump towards the end of the patrol, when I had a CTD and had to do the last week all over again).

Thanks for spotting that!

Good link. I want it ... but the price cannot be accepted. Booksellers seem to believe that during christmas the customers switch their brains off ...

For parts of europe it costs
- via Amazon.uk 36.36 EUR + undefined costs for delivery (maybe 15 euros or something like that) = 51.36€ = 68.14$
or
- via Amazon.europe = 58.99€ = 78.27$

Yeah - I post the link so everyone has a complete record of my sources, but it isn't exactly cheap. I had to save up for a month or two to buy it out my free cash. Is there something specific you wanted to look at, I could scan a page or two maybe?

Thanks for the post! It was great to read the diary, especially for me right now as I have not had the time to get any playing done myself.

A great patrol! Everything seemed to go smoothly and efficiently but then there was the airplane attack and damage - what a great game SH3 is In an instant one turns from the hunter to the hunted

You did well in evading the escorts, BTW

It was quite a sucessful patrol - very rewarding to be doing a full career on a proper difficulty setting, certainly. I was gutted to have wasted a lot of torpedoes on ships that ended up getting away, but hey ho, that's what happens in real life. I had an even more succesfull patrol where I sunk 72,000 GRT but didn't do a log for it

It's really good for reliving some old glory once in a while, in the captain's quarters with some fine captured English port!

Thanks for reading!
